We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. The Clerk I is under general supervision, to perform a variety of clerical functions concerning the maintenance of former student records and the processing of new student records; to prepare student records for storage; and to do other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
o Performs a variety of student record clerical tasks, including file purging, preparing records for filing, and recording of data.
o Answers the telephone and provides caller with routine information and data.
o Responds to written requests from appropriate agencies and persons regarding the public school records of former students.
o Receives, records and reviews and compares them with the originals to ensure accuracy and completeness.
o Prepares routine correspondence in response to informational requests.
o Maintains a variety of alphabetical, numerical and subject matter files and records.
o Processes student transcripts for distribution.
o Assists school secretary with purchase orders and position control documents.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
o Pass District Proficiency test
o Pass District's Bilingual (Spanish) exam
o Modern office methods, procedures, and techniques, particularly regarding student record management
o English usage, spelling grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic concepts
o Standard office machines and equipment
o Record storage, retrieval, and management systems
Ability to:
o Skillfully operate a microcomputer and computer terminals using related application software
o Perform general clerical work with speed and accuracy
o Make simple arithmetical calculations accurately
o Communicate effectively in oral and written form
o Type or keyboard at a net corrected speed of 30 words per minute;
o Understand and carry out oral and written directions in English
o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
o Bilingual (Spanish) may be required

o Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
o This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.
o Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

o One year of experience performing varied general office or clerical functions, preferably involving student record management.
Education:
o High school diploma or equivalent;
o Pass District proficiency exam.
