JOB TITLE: Director of Technology

                                                           

DEFINITION:                                   

Under the direction and supervision of the superintendent, Director of Technology plans, develops, implements, directs, reviews and evaluates the programs and activities related to instructional and information technology.  Plans, directs, designs, coordinates and administers network systems and subsystems including all servers and network hardware; resolving network operational issues; maintaining servers and network hardware and software. Programs and activities include use of technology to improve staff productivity and student learning; use of technology to maintain data and meet reporting requirements; coordination of purchase, installation, repair and use of electronic equipment, software, computers and peripherals; coordination of staff training to optimize technology use; development, optimization and oversight of district technology budget. Takes initiative in developing, implementing and monitoring the district-wide technology plan.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Any combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates ability to perform the required duties.  A typical qualifying background might include a bachelor’s or master’s degree; five years of increasingly responsible work with information/instructional technology; experience supervising others, managing networks; familiarity with school district operations; work experience in a school and District setting.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As assessed by the superintendent, the outcomes of the Director of Technology are as follows:

  1. Provides the leadership and direction needed to improve administrative operations through more effective use of technology; forecasts needs and requirements
  2. Designs and coordinates information management system and other technology based services to enhance student achievement in all subject areas
  3. Provides leadership to teaching staff in best use of technology to support student learning
  4. Works collaboratively with administrative staff to implement applications, training and staff development
  5. Manages the engineering, design, installation, modification, expansion and maintenance of the complete data infrastructure for the purpose of ensuring efficient and safe growth and development of IT services for teachers, staff and students.
  6. Designs, administers, maintains, installs network equipment, server software and hardware on a variety of platforms for the purpose of upgrading equipment and software.
  7. Monitors IT availability, security and related hardware and supporting software
  8. Repairs network-related failures
  9. Provides leadership and technical support

10.  Researches and keeps current on information required to manage assignments

11.  Supervises, trains, assists, guides and evaluates staff under his/her direction

12.  Assigns technology staff priorities and activities, monitors work flow

13.  Develops, implements and oversees Technology Plans; implements all IT Board policies and procedures

14.  Directs and coordinates the management of the internal and external web sites; collaborates with content providers in departments and sites; manages access

15.  Supports use of technology at school sites and allocates available resources to align with priorities

16.  Seeks and acquires additional financial and technology resources to support technology use

17.  Develops and delivers reports as needed

18.  Supports reporting activities (CBEDS, CalPADS, SARC, etc.)

19.  Directs, manages and administers vendor service agreements and consultant contracts as needed

20.  Develops and monitors technology budgets and maintains appropriate fiscal records

21.  Presents and represents Districts at meetings and conferences

22.  Update, renew and track all district software licensing and equipment warranties, including, but not limited to Comcast, AT&T, emergency radio, and Sprint Mobile

23.  Manages technology inventory and e-waste

24.  Coordinate with the Contra Costa County Office of Education to provide annual District Internet access

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Research on best practices for use of instructional technology to increase student achievement and increase staff productivity
  2. Principles and practices of data processing, project management, administration and evaluation, network and infrastructure management and design, database management and systems applications
  3. Principles and practices of the establishment, installation and maintenance of a district-wide network, operational characteristics and requirements of computer hardware and peripheral equipment
  4. Principles and practices of organization, administration and personnel management including supervision, training and performance evaluation, budget preparations and administration
  5. Applicable federal, state and local laws, procedures and regulations
  6. Effective communication techniques

ABILITY TO:

  1. Direct and evaluate the operations and activities related to technology including district wide network; the purchase, leasing, installation, repair and use of electronic equipment, software and computer peripherals
  2. Design, develop, implement, review and evaluate the strategic district wide technology planning including instructional and administrative applications
  3. Analyze strategic direction of district plan for technology; provide solutions and future direction in support of plan and goals and objectives
  4. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendation in support of goals
  5. Develop creative solutions to technology challenges in spite of minimal resources
  6. Conduct training and in-service session for district personnel
  7. Work collaboratively with other to support technology plan objectives

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone and to make presentation; seeing to conduct inspection, read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store supplies, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds
