BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION 

Under general supervision/direction of the site administrator, assists the classroom instructor, provides bilingual paraprofessional instructional activities, works with students individually or in groups to reinforce instruction in academic skills; assists non-English speaking students using their native language as necessary in addition to English translation and performs other duties directly related to this job description.  Shall be familiar with and comply with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position and shall adhere to all applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and school district governing board. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists limited or non-English speaking students and parents using their native language in addition to English translation.
  • Assists with developing the English skills of limited or non-English speaking students.
  • Assists classroom instructor with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises providing translation and correct language reinforcement as necessary.
  • Tutors students individually or in small groups to strengthen and follow up learning activity.
  • Monitors and assists students through drill, practice and language activities following the presentation of instructional concepts by the instructor.
  • Assists students in review of math concepts, reads to students, explains words and meanings, and emphasizes correct language usage.
  • Assists instructor in instructional and non-instructional functions as requested.
  • Supervises classroom, yard and field trip activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning staff, students and their families.
  • Assists with lunch counts and distribution of food (Enterprise High School) as needed.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly work station.
  • Willingness to update skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of this position.
  • Shall perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Shall be able to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to pass District bilingual proficiency examinations.
  • Knowledge and ability to use correct English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and proper use of bilingual assignment language.
  • Knowledge of general concepts of child growth and development and student behavior characteristics.
  • Skill and ability to effectively communicate (read, write and converse fluently) in a language other than English in instructional areas such as reading, language arts, mathematics.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Ability to assist in the management and shaping of student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children and parents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to pass the District job related test.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Light to moderate physical effort standing and/or walking for extended periods of time; lift and move instructional materials and equipment.
  • Moderate stress level.

  • Classroom, yard or lunchroom environment.
  • Temperature – normal climate, occasional out-door adverse weather conditions.

POSITION RESTRICTIONS

  • Shall not assume the total instructional responsibility for instruction of pupils in any subject.
  • Shall not grade papers which require subjective evaluation by the teacher.
  • Limited participation in discipline follow-up procedures.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working with children (Preferred)
  • Bilingual

 

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

  • AA/AS or 48 college units.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
