VISALIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Unit: Classified JOB DESCRIPTIONS Issue No. 1 Date: 11-93 Page 1 of 3 Section: Operations and Transportation Services Job Title: BUS DRIVER RANGE: 50 Under the supervision of or assigned by the District Transportation Director operate various school buses to transport students on designated routes and time schedules, and perform related activities. Typical Duties: 1. Drive a school bus or other transportation vehicle on an assigned route and time schedule and/or on special trips in conformity with District policies and rules and regulations stipulated by the California Highway Patrol and State Department of Education; 2. Transport students to and from school and students, teachers and chaperones on field trips; 3. Wash, sweep, clean and refuel buses and other automotive transportation equipment maintaining them in a clean orderly condition; 4. Inspect the bus or other transportation vehicles, as required, for mechanical conditions affecting safety of operation and report defects or malfunctions; 5. Complete required reports; 6. Adhere to policies and procedures regarding student behavior management and public contact concerning transportation problems and concerns; 7. Maintain student order on bus and report discipline problems to the proper authorities; 8. May transport children with special learning needs; 9. Render first aid when necessary; 10. Stop traffic and escort children across streets, when necessary; 11. Attend inservice training classes and safety meetings; 12. Perform other related duties as assigned. Personal Characteristics: Should possess personal characteristics generally recognized as essential for good public employees including integrity, initiative, emotional maturity, dependability, courtesy, good judgment and ability to work cooperatively with others. Position Qualifications: Knowledge of: Comprehensive driving safety and courtesy; rules, regulations, procedures and laws related to the operation of a passenger vehicle; provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children; safety and maintenance requirements of bus and other pupil transportation equipment; basic first aid procedures and methods; typical child behavior characteristics and appropriate behavior management techniques. Ability to: Be patient, receptive, and empathetic toward all students; maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment; perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy; maintain a satisfactory driving record and clear criminal background appropriate to a professional driver which meets all contractual, local, state and federal requirements; safely and efficiently operate all Transportation district vehicles and equipment including full-size buses, automatic and standard shift vehicles, and Type II buses; understand and carry out oral and written directions; communicate appropriately in oral and written form; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Certificate/License/Insurance Requirement: Possess California Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License, with endorsements for passengers and air brakes; possess School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the CA Dept of Motor Vehicles; Medical Examiner's Certificate (DMV No. DL51-51A); and be insurable by the District liability insurance carrier; take and pass periodic substance abuse tests as prescribed by the district. Experience: Experience in operation of a four wheel motor vehicle. Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a state certified school bus driver training program. Physical Requirements: Physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position without hazard to themselves or others. Pass the state required physical examination. Physical abilities to include: Possess dexterity of hands, fingers, arms, legs and feet to drive assigned vehicles and operate equipment (Example: turn steering wheel, shift transmission, push/pull manual door open/closed, push the emergency door open/closed) Sit for extended periods of time (Example: driving vehicles) Stand, walk, climb, bend and twist, kneel, crawl and stoop, step up and down for brief periods of time (Example: walk to and from bus, walk in aisles, walk around bus, stoop and kneel to inspect vehicle, exit through emergency door; reach to open and close doors, check fluids) Lift and carry 40 pounds (Example: lift hood of vehicle, lift and carry wheel chalks, tire chains, mail bag and luggage) Assist students with special needs to and from seat (Example: Assist students with limited physical ability off/on seat) Reach in all directions (Example: open and shut door, shift, open and close windows, install tire chains) Physical Abilities/Environment (cont): Adequate sight or corrected vision for the purpose of reading written materials and operating vehicles (Examples: laws, rules, policies, maps, schedules, forms; traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, inspection of vehicle and monitoring of passengers) Clearly write to complete required forms and reports Hear and speak at normal levels to communicate with others (Examples: listen to traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, detect mechanical problems, listen and respond to passenger inquiries, monitor and communicate on 2-way radio).
