Definition:
The Facilities Department is seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Custodian. Comprised of two colleges, West Valley College and Mission College, we are located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate our two colleges for our friendly staff and supportive atmosphere.
Under general supervision, perform a variety of cleaning tasks in assigned building areas, move office equipment and fixtures as required.

Assignment:
100% of full time, 37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year, with anticipated start date of July 20, 2016. This position will be assigned the graveyard shift, 10pm-6am. Schedule assignment may change, as needed. This position is a member of the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association (WVMCEA ), Operations & Support Services Employee Unit.
Work Location: Facilities Department, West Valley College, Saratoga, CA.
This position may be assigned to either Mission College or West Valley College, or re-assigned from one College to the other.
PLEASE NOTE :
We have begun a district-wide classification study of all regular, non-faculty staff positions. A classification study is a process of studying, analyzing, and describing the nature and level of work performed by employees. This classification study will ultimately produce uniform job descriptions for every employee.
The classification study will also include a compensation study that will provide information on what other employers pay employees who are performing similar duties. The District will use this information to ensure that our employees are adequately compensated.
The classification study started in November 2014 and is expected to take approximately 12-18 months to complete. As a result of this study, it is possible for the job description and/or compensation to change in this position opening.
Salary and Benefits:
• Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,441–$3,742 monthly (Classified Operations & Support Salary Schedule, Range 49, Steps A-C).
• $125 shift differential pay.

• Educational growth incentive program from $40 to $200 monthly.
• $500 longevity award annually after 10 years of service and $1,000 longevity award annually after 15 years of service.

• Position is union affiliated with required dues.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Any combination of training and experience equivalent to one year in custodial work which demonstrates ability to perform custodial tasks;
AND
2. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIREMENTS
As part of the essential functions of this position, incumbents are required to:
• Understand, follow and implement written, verbal or demonstrated instructions;
• Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, count and record numbers and write identifying information;
• Request supplies verbally or in writing;
• Perform heavy work; exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
• Have far, near and mid-range vision as well as depth perception, with or without corrective lenses; and
• Be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions on a regular basis.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty of the position satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions required for the position.
• Sweep, scrub, strip, vacuum, wax and polish floors, spot clean, shampoo and steam clean rugs and carpets.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms including fixtures, floors and walls.
• Clean and dust walls, furniture, woodwork and windows.
• Perform work assigned to project teams during non-class (break) periods, or as a project worker, shampoo carpets, strip and wax floors, renovate restrooms, clean chalkboards and wash windows.
• Replace light bulbs, may use up to a six (6) foot ladder. Order and restock janitorial and cleaning supplies.
• Pick up refuse from facilities and on grounds.
• Maintain equipment and tools use. May perform minor repairs on equipment.
• Open and close classrooms and other facilities and arrange furniture and equipment for “set-ups” for college and community events.
• Lock and unlock buildings and classrooms, as assigned.
• Move and rearrange furniture and other equipment, as required.
• Operate district vehicles, as needed.
• Report sanitary and safety hazards and the need for repairs to the proper authorities.
• May remove and/or replace pool cover, as needed.
• Present to the supervisor matters requiring the supervisor’s decision. Act on the supervisor’s directives and recommendations.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors within the area of responsibility.
• Attend and participate in District and/or College provided training or information sessions.
• Incorporate new information or technology into existing job duties as directed by supervisor.
• Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
