TEACHER - MUSIC - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADES K - 5 DEFINITION Under general supervision, serves as a music teacher in grades K through 5 or a combination thereof; and creates a flexible program and suitable classroom environment favorable to learning music and in accordance with each student's ability. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Under the supervision of the school site administrator, provides an educational music program for kindergarten through grade five students. To develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture, to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression, to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music, and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to secondary students; utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities; instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district; plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time; provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students; controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required; establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances; evaluates each student's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group; plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community; selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records; communicates with parents and school counselors on students' progress; identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems; cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions; supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned; participates in curriculum and other developmental programs; participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities; maintains professional competence through inservice education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music; participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines. Ability to: Interact effectively with staff, parents, students, and community; Clearly communicate orally or in writing;Accept criticism and grow as a result;Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills;Deliver appropriate instruction and provide activities for students to meet school/District policies, goals, and objectives;Evaluate academic and social growth of students and keep appropriate records. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university including all courses needed to meet requirements for a teaching credential authorizing service in the grade levels and areas assigned. Experience: Successful teaching experience, internship, or student teaching. REQUIRED CREDENTIALS AND/OR CERTIFICATES Valid California teaching credential authorizing service in the grade levels or areas assigned.
