RECESS PROGRAM COORDINATOR

This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of this position is contingent upon grant funding.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

Under the direction of the Director of Elementary Education, the Recess Program Coordinator oversees the planning and implementation of the structured recess physical activity program. The program provides a comprehensive school-based play and youth development program during recess, lunch, and before or after school at elementary school sites. The Recess Program Coordinator trains and supervises Paraprofessionals in the program, develops trainings for staff, and facilitates the implementation of any new or modified programming.

FUNCTIONS

  • Trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff;
  • Participates in the development of lesson planning and recess activities for program staff;
  • Organizes and facilitates professional development programs for staff;
  • Communicates with administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities, resolve issues and conflicts, provide and exchange information;
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of new support staff;
  • Assists in the development and organization of special events, field trips, etc.;
  • Represents the District in the community and establishes new relationships to build program support;
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports pertaining to the operation of the program;
  • Prepares and presents presentations to individuals and groups;
  • Conducts and attends a variety of meetings;
  • Provides technical expertise, information and assistance to the Director regarding assigned functions; assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs;
  • Operates a computer and other office equipment;
  • Travels to various sites throughout the District and community to conduct work;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.  An example of an acceptable combination is:

  • Three (3) years of formal experience working with children to facilitate physical activity programs, school based or after-school programs, youth leagues and summer camps, or within other youth service agencies in the nonprofit sector.
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in Physical Education, Psychology, or Sociology;
  • One (1) year of experience supervising staff.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual English/ Spanish

 

SKILLS  to develop and implement physical activity programs; train and oversee support staff; create programs, lessons, and activities for youth and adults; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records; operate a computer (Microsoft Word and Excel); use internet based programs; administer first aid and athletic therapy.

 

KNOWLEDGE of youth development strategies as they relate to sports and play; supervision and training techniques; first aid and CPR procedures; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; safe practices in classroom and playground activities; universal precautions applicable to handling bodily fluids and other hazardous materials; proper lifting techniques; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; emergency equipment and procedures as they apply to the position.

 

ABILITY to assure student understanding of proper exercise techniques; provide support and direction to staff; communicate with diverse groups orally and in writing; maintain confidentiality and use discretion; exhibit patience and compassion; work with frequent interruptions; learn, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; understand and follow oral and written directions; adapt to changing work locations and environments; set priorities; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work as part of a team; understand and be sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of vendors, district personnel and administrators; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking, and 25% standing.
