LIBRARY/MEDIA TECHNICIAN
BASIC FUNCTION
Under supervision of the principal, to provide library media services to students and staff; to order, process, shelve, distribute and receive all types of library media; to maintain files and records; and to do related duties as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Acquires and processes library books, textbooks, pamphlets, periodicals and audio-visual stocks (E);
Maintains records of budget items and circulation materials (E);
Inventories overdue, lost and damaged items, and circulation and distribution materials (E);
Aids student and staff in the use of all library materials and media (E);
Provide assistance and instruction to students in locating and utilizing resources; reinforce library skills and maintain discipline in the library; supervise students in the library (E);
Performs financial transactions (E);
Develops and maintains schedules for students and staff for use of library materials and equipment (E);
Develops and maintains catalogs of books and audio-visual materials (E);
Introduces new materials to staff and students (E);
Orders requested materials (E);
Requests unavailable materials from other sources (E);
Compiles bibliographies of available resources (E);
Assists students and staff in locating and selecting materials (E);
Researches professional magazines, catalogs and newspapers (E);
Maintains library materials and equipment, including books and AV wares in good condition (E);
Arranges, stocks, shelves and boxes books and AV materials (E);
Trains and supervises student assistants and volunteers (E);
Operates standard office machines, including a computer, and other library media (E);
Performs clerical support duties such as typing, filing and duplications (E);
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Standard office practices, procedures, techniques and equipment and program use;
Library procedures and terminology, including the Dewey Decimal system;
Dewey Decimal Classification System and basic library/media reference materials;
Circulation, distribution and processing of library books, textbooks and related materials;
Audio-visual technical practices, procedures and terminology;
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation;
District accounting procedures;
Basic math and record keeping skills;
Basic technology skills and usage.
Ability to:
Operate office machines, AV equipment and computers;
Monitor and maintain appropriate student behavior;
Maintain records and files using alphabetic and numeric systems;
Maintain library in an orderly and safe condition;
Lift heavy objects in a safe manner;
Plan and organize work;
Train and provide work direction to students and volunteers;
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Complete work with many interruptions;
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff, students, administrators and the public;
Use interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;
Exercise independent judgment;
Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Associate of Arts degree in library media technology desired or specialized training in library skills.
Experience:
Two years experience in a variety of library media services preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR
Standing and walking for extended periods of time;
Library environment.
Physical Abilities:
Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds;
Near and far visual acuity to read books and media materials;
Frequent bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching;
Lifting, carrying and shelving books;
Reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to shelve and reach books;
Hearing and speaking to exchange information;
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment;
Walking and standing for extended periods of time;
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Mental Abilities:
Oral comprehension and expression;
Written comprehension;
Auditory understanding;
Speech recognition.
