R50 Student Advisor Characteristics of Class Under supervision of a teacher/administrator, employee assists in developing and implanting programs, which promote positive relationships between parents, community representatives, and school personnel. Employee acts as liaison between parent and community groups, teachers and other employees of the San Francisco for the purpose of providing information and developing a better understanding among these groups. Employee works with Instructional Aides and volunteers. Employee performs related duties as required. Some positions may require conversational and written skills in a specific language(s) other than English related to the needs of the assignment. An ability to translate and adapt materials to and from English into that language(s) may also be required. Some positions may require that the employee furnish a certificate of clearance from the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to meet District insurability. Distinguishing Characteristics The employee is responsible for the organization, implementation, and coordination of a community relations program as a student advisor at a secondary level. Employee must work with a designated pupil population under the supervision of an administrator. Duties include assisting in the implementation of the program designed to effectively serve this pupil population. Minimum Qualifications At least four years of progressively responsible experience in community relations or public relations (Two years of college in social sciences or a related field may be substituted for two years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.). Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Utilizes knowledge appropriate to satisfy the Distinguishing Characteristics of the class listed above, example of which may include familiarity with the goals of specific programs or projects as well as the District’s organization, rules and regulations, policies and programs as they relate to parents in various communities. Demonstrates competency in performing the following tasks; working with pupils and adults, acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, working with and relating to all individuals within the culturally diverse environment of SFUSD, and developing and maintaining effective, courteous communications with pupils, staff and public. Examples of Duties: R50 1. Works with Instructional Aides in the recruitment of parents for Advisory Groups for schools within an assigned area. 2. Organizes, implements, and coordinates informational workshops and multicultural events and projects for parents, school staff, pupils, and members of the community, attends meetings and reports on the progress of the program as needed. 3. Supervisors and participates in the preparation and distribution of brochures, newsletters, media presentations and other educational materials to inform parents and the community of school policies and other issues related to the welfare of school age pupils. 4. As assigned, may train, direct, organize and oversee Instructional Aides in tutorial program objectives, primary intervention program objectives and parent liaison contacts. 5. May assist in administering the budget allocated to the school community relations program in the assigned area; keep inventories of supplies. 6. As assigned, performs a variety of services through the Student Attendance Office; aids in referring pupils to special programs; supervises and participates in the maintenance of special program assignments records. 7. Performs related duties as required.
