TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT
READING SPECIALIST
DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Director, Special Education, assist with the instruction, planning, coordination and directing of reading related activities and programs related to the administration of the school according to State and District mandates.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a coach to teachers implementing services to struggling readers.
- Help teachers assess student strengths and needs in the area of reading through classroom observation, interpretation of data, evaluation of student work, and standardized reading assessments.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with teachers that allow for the exchange of honest feedback and professional growth.
- Teach demonstration lessons as needed.
- Provide professional development for teachers in including but not limited to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies.
- Work with other content area specialists to embed UDL strategies in all trainings.
- Gather and provide resources for teachers to use with students who struggle.
- Assist teachers in collaborative teaching settings with differentiation of instruction and implementation of strategies.
- Facilitate professional learning communities and task force meetings related to Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
- Coordinate, schedule, communicate, and facilitate Special Education teacher and instructional aide trainings.
- Create training courses for Special Education teachers, instructional aides, and intervention teachers.
- Attend trainings and work collaboratively with other District reading specialists to develop best practice models.
- Maintain the Tiered Intervention Strategies website and other Special Education and intervention web based resources for teachers and staff.
- Coordinate, schedule, communicate and facilitate intervention program support and training.
- Review instructional materials for universal access components and alignment with California State Content Standards (CSCS).
- Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrate technological proficiency.
- Assess individual students in reading and develop student programming.
- Attend SST, 504, and IEP meetings to provide reading expertise.
- Perform other duties as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Background knowledge and experience in teaching students with disabilities; evidence of leadership and coaching experience; strong organizational skills; excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills; knowledge and experience in iRead, System 44, and Read 180.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive reading instruction program for struggling students in K-12. Provide effective learning experiences for students from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and with varying mental, social, and emotional levels; assess the educational needs of students, and design, develop, and implement sound individualized educational plans; provide a stimulating learning environment; perform research and development activities pertaining to reading curriculum and instruction programs, projects, and innovative programs designed to enhance pupil educational opportunities and experiences; utilize technology to enhance classroom lessons as a means for various types of communication and record keeping; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work cooperatively and collaboratively with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Experience:
Minimum of five years successful teaching experience.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Physical Performance Requirements:
Frequent sitting, standing or walking much of the time with some bending, stooping, squatting and twisting. Lifting of supplies and other work related materials will vary, but generally be of less than twenty pounds.
Licenses/Credentials:
Valid mild/moderate specialist credential with autism authorization and a multiple subject OR single subject credential and Reading Specialist Certificate preferred. Possession of a valid California driver’s license, if required.
