Position Description
Under general supervision, to do skilled work in the installation, repair, adjustment, and
replacemeoflocks on lockers, doors and cabinets; to make keys; and to do related work as may be
required. A major portion of the time of positions in this class is spent performing skilled locksmithing
work. Incumbents regularly carry out a wide range of general maintenance outside the locksmithing
trade. As assigned, incumbents will perform tasks in other trades at an unskilled and/or semiskilled
level as helper or independently. Assists in other maintenance areas by performing unskilled,
semiskilled duties.
Example of Duties/Responsibilities
1. Installs new locks, repairs and opens locks, and changes lock combinations using hand
tools and equipment
2. Disassembles locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs and other parts
3. Shortens tumblers, using file, and inserts new or repaired tumblers into lock to change
combination
4. Cuts new or duplicate keys, using key cutting machines
5. Implements keying system for new sites
6. Assists in setting up and maintaining master key systems and maintains records and
security of duplicate keys
7. Repairs panic bar and other exit hardware
8. Makes estimates of labor and materials for work orders
9. Maintains gas, oil and water in assigned vehicle
10. Coordinates the work of helpers
11. Performs other job related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Methods, tools, practices, parts, and types of equipment used in the trade of a locksmith; Construction and repair of various makes of locks; Variety of locks available and best use for each type; Key code systems; Installation, adjustment, and repair of panic door exit devices and hydraulic door closures and floor hinges.
Ability to:
Maintain and repair a variety of locks and related hardware; assist in setting up master key systems and make master keys; read blueprints and specifications; operate key code and tracing machines;
use depth keys; assist in setting up keying schedules; keep simple records; analyze lock and hardware requirements and malfunctions; recommend the selecting and ordering of parts and supplies from catalogs; assist in estimating time and materials for projects; understand and carry out written and oral directions; work effectively with others.
Education and Experience
Education: High school diploma or equivalency required. PROOF OF EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT MUST ACCOMPANY THE APPLICATION
Experience: One (1) year of experience as a journeyman level locksmith or four (4) years of progressively more responsible experience in assisting in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of locks, keys, and related equipment.
License
• Possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment.
• Must be bondable and maintain such bond ability during employment.
Requirements / Qualifications
