The initial salary placement for this Counselor level position begins between $5,071.30 – $6,803.29 per month. The highest monthly base starting salary is $6,803.29 with a PhD. The maximum salary potential over the span of the Counselor position career may reach $11,086.15. Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011).

The Position
The San Diego Community College District is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor/Counselor, Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS), 100%, 10-month assignment in San Diego Continuing Education. Applicants should understand that they may be assigned to any Continuing Education campus, and that they may be required to work a split assignment between two campuses. San Diego Continuing Education offers adult students the opportunity to renew their learning experiences through non-credit career technical, basic skills, life skills and enrichment classes throughout the city of San Diego.
Under the direction of the Dean of Disability Support Programs and Services and Student Affairs, the incumbent will be responsible for the provision of counseling and support services to students with disabilities enrolled in San Diego Continuing Education, and in maintaining legal compliance with all district policies, as well as all State and Federal mandates.
While the current vacancy is at San Diego Continuing Education, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities:
The successful candidate must be able to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
• Provide academic, career, personal and disability management counseling to students with disabilities to include initial intake interview, assessment, orientation, advisement, registration assistance, disability verification, and maintenance of confidential student files.
• Facilitate the provision of support services and authorized academic accommodations, i.e., access technology, adaptive equipment, liaison with faculty, resource support, testing accommodations, etc.
• Develop and/or monitor Student Education Contracts (SEC) and utilize information to assist students in meeting their goals.
• Maintain liaison with educational and community based organizations for ongoing referral, outreach and recruitment.
• Provide consultation and support to faculty, staff and administration regarding student issues, educational programs and compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Travel to various district campuses and programs to meet students and faculty as necessary.
• Provide group counseling and /or facilitate personal development workshops as needed.
• Communicate the DSPS mission, responsibilities, and services to potential and current students, community organizations, staff, faculty, and administrators.
• Participate in Program Review and Student Learning Outcomes activities as needed.
• Serve as a member of Continuing Education and District committees and task forces as requested.
• Attend professional conferences and workshops relevant to DSPS.
• Participate in public information/marketing activities; high school visits and other transition events as necessary to support DSPS.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions
Applicants for this position must show evidence of meeting one (1) of the following four (4) requirements:
1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR,
2. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education – AND – twenty-four or more semester units in upper division or graduate-level coursework in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work; OR,
3. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling, Guidance, Student Personnel, Psychology, Career Development, or Social Welfare; AND,
Either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate-level coursework specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities – OR – two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; OR, (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
OR,
4. Possession of a California Community College Credential as a Disability Support Programs and Services Counselor (valid for life).

• Experience providing individual, academic and vocational counseling with adult students with disabilities.
• Experience providing access and determining appropriate accommodations for adult students with disabilities.
• Ability to establish and maintain collegial and cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and administration.
• Ability to facilitate access to community resources.
• Ability to maintain student records in compliance with legal requirements.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, disability and LGBTQ backgrounds.
• Experience facilitating community partnerships and outreach for persons with disabilities.
• Ability to serve as an effective advocate for students and program compliance.
