JOB DESCRIPTION Palm Springs Unified School District A.R. # 4232.341 GROUNDSKEEPER II PURPOSE STATEMENT The Groundskeeper II maintains attractive grounds areas and athletic fields; applies required pesticides; ensures the availability of required equipment; protects against erosion; maintains grounds for assemblies, recreational activities and/or athletic events; and ensures assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner. FUNCTIONS • Maintains groundskeeping and playground equipment in safe operating condition. • Maintains landscaping and athletic fields (e.g. mow/trim lawns, rakes leaves, picks up trash, prunes, trims trees/hedges, etc.) in a healthy, attractive and safe condition. • Plants various landscaping materials (e.g. shrubbery, flowers, lawns, trees, hedges, etc.). • Prepares grounds and athletic fields (e.g. fertilizes soil, courtyards, flower beds, stripping, etc.) assemblies, recreational activities and/or athletic events. • Procures materials, supplies and equipment. • Transports various items (e.g. sand, dirt, furniture, equipment, supplies, fertilizer, etc.) to school sites and district offices. • Coordinates with Unit Manager and other site administrators regarding irrigation schedules, spraying schedules, and field preparation. • Cleans landscaped areas and related items (e.g. storm drains, walkways, etc.). • Prepares reports to document pesticide application. • Operates heavy equipment (e.g. trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoe, etc.). • Repairs irrigation systems and components (e.g. valves, wiring, o-rings, electronic timers, switches, timer motors, panels, etc.). • Assists other personnel as may be required. • Performs related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable combination is: Two years of gardening and grounds-keeping experience, and the operation of related equipment. SKILLS are required to mow, edge, water, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas; operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds keeping such as walk-behind mowers, edgers, blowers, vacuums and standard gardening hand tools; operate tractors, trucks, and other heavy grounds maintenance equipment; perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds maintenance equipment. KNOWLEDGE of cultivation, fertilization and irrigation techniques for flowers, lawns, trees and shrubs; methods and materials used in contolling pests, insects and weeds; operation of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment; preventive and scheduled maintenance programs and practices; requirements for maintaining grounds, buildings, facilities and equipment in good repair. ABILITY to comprehend and follow directions; demonstrate safe work habits and observe all applicable worker safety rules and laws; understand and carry out verbal and written directions and schedules; maintain a work pace for self and others appropriate to a given workload; establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, fellow employees, teachers, and administrators; understand, be sensitive to and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, teachers, administrators and staff; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
