SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER LATERAL/ACADEMY GRADUATE BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Chief of School Police Services or designee, patrol school District property to provide safety and security for property and personnel; make recommendations for security of sites. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Operate a patrol car to patrol District property; respond to requests for assistance from school sites. E Patrol on foot, checking security of school District buildings; confront trespassers as necessary. E Contact and cooperate with local enforcement agencies. E Apprehend and interrogate suspects regarding malicious mischief, vandalism, and possible illegal acts; conduct investigations on unusual incidents. E Attempt to locate and recover stolen property. E Prepare crime reports and maintain log of activities. E Provide safety and security for personnel and property of the District. E Enforce penal codes and Education Code as a peace officer. E Maintain condition of patrol vehicle. E Establish and maintain good public relations and communications with the public and District employees. E Conduct crime prevention surveys of school sites and make recommendations for crime prevention. E Perform on site surveillance and stakeout when necessary. E Perform temporary repair of doors, windows, gates and fences. Instruct and orient new security patrol employees. Perform related duties as assigned. SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER LATERAL/ACADEMY GRADUATE –(Continued) KNOWLEDGE OF: Cultural differences in the community. Alarm systems and radio equipment. Penal Code and city and county ordinances. Applicable sections of State Education Code. Reading and writing communications skills. ABILITY TO: Maintain records and prepare reports. Work confidentially with discretion. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Conduct investigations. Make quick decisions in emergency situations. Relate effectively with all levels of the public. Utilize firearms with safety and proficiency. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from P.O.S.T Police Academy within the past three years or possess a current basic P.O.S.T. certificate. Preferred any combination equivalent to two years of college with emphasis on law enforcement and police science and at least one year of experience in law enforcement agency or school district experience of a similar nature. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. Basic Police Officer's Standards and Training Certificate Current First Aid certificate. Current CPR certificate. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Carrying of a firearm to conduct work. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Walking campus grounds. Seeing to monitor student behaviors and read materials.
