JOB TITLE: Grounds Worker Job Family: Maintenance & Operations Range: 28 Report Identification Code = mgrwkr Job Purpose Statement/s: The job of "Grounds Worker" is done for the purpose/s of performing general grounds maintenance and gardening work at assigned school site(s) for the District, requiring a thorough knowledge of gardening and irrigation. Essential Job Functions: * Plants, cultivates, prunes, shapes, trims, waters and sprays trees, shrubs, hedges and plants. * Plants, fertilizes, waters, mows and cares for lawns. * Uses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas. * Hoes and rakes weeds, leaves and grass clippings. * Operates hand and power tools and equipment, including power mowers, edgers, sprayers, tractors, roto tillers, air compressors, trimmers, blowers and other grounds maintenance equipment/tools. * Keeps school grounds clean; operates backpack blower and picks up paper, rubbish and other debris. * Applies pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposes. * Cleans and maintains drainage areas; cleans gutters and roofs. * Installs, maintains and repairs sprinklers and sprinkler systems. * Maintains hoses, supplies and tools in proper condition and repair. * Performs minor service and repair work on groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, edgers, sprayers, backpack blowers. * Digs postholes and trenches as assigned. * Sets up/takes down chairs and props for special events as assigned. * Drives District truck, tractor and/or gang mowers, and other vehicles as assigned. * Prepares athletic fields. * When not engaged in grounds maintenance or gardening duties, may assist as required in a variety of maintenance work throughout the District involving heavy manual labor and semi-skilled tasks. Other Job Functions: * Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. * Transports various items (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials at job site as required to complete tasks. Job Requirements - Qualifications: * Experience Required: One (1) year prior job related experience. * Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skills to read and interpret plans; operate equipment in safe manner, perform basic math necessary to calculate fertilizer and chemical applications. Knowledge of methods and use of tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance; safe work practices standards for safe use of fertilizers, chemicals and equipment. Ability to walk for prolonged periods, follow oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, perform a variety of tasks. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, far visual acuity. Understand and follow both oral and written instructions as required to perform duties successfully. Read and interpret basic blueprints and landscaping plans. * Education Required: High School diploma or equivalent. * Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, negative pre-employment drug screen test and negative TB test results. Successful completion of District Proficiency Test.
