FULLERTON JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

BASIC FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Educational and Assessment Services, the Director of Special Education, and a Registered School Nurse (RN), the LVN performs specialized health services for students in regular and special education programs, within limits of licensure and school nurse directions; administers medications and performs other specialized physical health care procedures in accordance with physician’s orders; performs medical assessments of students as a result of illness, injury, seizure, or other medical problems occurring at school; communicates with parents, school site and District personnel regarding health related matters; and performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES
1. Monitors the physical and medical conditions of students in assigned schools; makes medical assessments of students resulting from illness, injury, seizure or other medical problems occurring at school.
2. Performs specialized health services to students including but not limited to toileting assistance, catheterization, gavage feeding, ostomy care, tracheotomy and suctioning, monitoring students on oxygen and ventilators, and assisting in physically positioning and/or transferring students as required.
3. Provides emergency medical care in the event of serious illness or accident, including CPR and First Aid as required.
4. Dispenses medications pursuant to physician’s instructions.
5. Communicates with the RN, staff, and parents as necessary regarding any school site medical issues.
6. Provides appropriate and required health related training for school staff.
7. Prepares for review, reports for assigned school(s), District, and county and state agencies.
8. Maintains records of all services provided for each student, including medicines and feedings administered and trachea and other care provided; completes incident and contact reports; maintains records of bruises and marks; and completes and submits MAA reports on medical services provided to students.
9. Assists in providing appropriate health instruction to students in a variety of settings (may be one-to-one, classroom or Non-Public School setting).
10. Monitors student activities in the classroom setting, as assigned.
11. Travels to various school sites to perform a variety of nursing duties.
12. Assists in vision and hearing assessments, as assigned.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES
1. Assists with other administrative activities as assigned.
2. Attends various meetings and training sessions as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of
1. Laws and regulations applicable to the role of a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
2. Safe work practices and safe procedures for performing physical care for medically fragile students.
3. Universal precautions and control of infectious diseases.
4. Child abuse reporting requirements.
5. Administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping and filing practices and procedures.
6. CPR and First Aid.
7. Methods and practices of performing routine medical/physical care of medically complex students, including the administration of medicines, g-tube feedings, and trachea care and suctioning.
8. Facial, body language and other indicators of physical discomfort and distress in a child who is unable to communicate verbally.

Ability to
1. Perform assigned medically-oriented assessments and specialized health care procedures efficiently and with compassion.
2. Understand the needs of medically complex special education students.
3. Observe and interpret students’ non-verbal communications, including facial expressions, oral sounds, and body language in order to identify potential problems before they become serious.
4. Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
5. Maintain detailed and confidential student records and files.
6. Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
7. Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
8. Lift and restrain students according to approved policies and procedures.
9. Effectively deal with sensitive and difficult situations.
10. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county and state representatives, District and site administration, faculty and staff, parents, students, physicians, and all others encountered in the course of work.
11. Demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete the duties of the position as required.

Licenses, Certificates, & Special Requirements
1. A valid license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California, including requirements for administration of prescribed medications.
2. Completion of high school or General Education Diploma (GED).
3. Valid CPR and First Aid certifications
4. A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of a Licensed Vocational Nurse, an employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; speak and listen, both in person and by telephone and email; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms from the waist to a level at or above the shoulders; bend, stoop, push, pull, grasp, squat, kneel, twist, crawl, climb, and balance to access materials and/or equipment; smell; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and lift up to 100 pounds with assistance from ground, waist and chest level; and travel over uneven terrain that may include gravel, dirt, or stairs.

Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use effective written and oral communication skills; read and interpret medical orders and directives; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use basic math; learn and apply new information or skills; work under deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with county and state representatives, site and District administration, faculty and staff, parents, students, physicians, and others encountered in the course of work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment encountered while performing the essential functions of a Licensed Vocational Nurse is a classroom, nurse’s office, school yard, school bus, restroom or non-public school.
