Community Day School (CDS) – California Summary Definition (Staff-Focused) A Community Day School (CDS) in California is a district-operated public school designed for students who have been expelled, referred by a School Attendance Review Board (SARB), placed on probation, or identified as significantly at risk. These schools provide structured academic instruction and comprehensive behavioral support in a smaller, more controlled setting. Staff at a Community Day School have unique and critical responsibilities, including: Providing a minimum of 360 instructional minutes daily, delivered directly by certificated district teachers (independent study is not permitted). Delivering individualized academic instruction tailored to students’ specific learning needs and behavioral goals. Maintaining low student-to-staff ratios to ensure close supervision, engagement, and safety. Supporting students’ social-emotional development, resiliency, and pro-social behavior through consistent intervention and relationship-building. Collaborating with probation officers, social workers, and community agencies to coordinate wraparound services. Upholding a safe, structured, and restorative environment that fosters re-entry readiness into comprehensive school settings. Staff must be equipped to work with high-need youth in an environment that requires patience, consistency, cultural responsiveness, and trauma-informed practices.

*Application must include current updated resume, 2 letters of recommendation (physically signed AND dated within the last 3 years) and a letter of intent. Letters of recommendation written by family members will not be accepted. A complete application will go through the screening process and an incomplete application will not. SKILLS: AA/AS degree or 48 semester units or passing score on NCLB Compliant Instructional Associate test
