MECHANIC III Definition Under direction, to perform skilled mechanical repair and maintenance on school buses and other automotive and mechanical equipment; to service and make major and minor mechanical repair to school buses and other automotive and mechanical equipment; and to do related work as required. Responsible to Shop Manager Examples of Duties 1. Inspects mechanical equipment and carries out a preventive maintenance program. 2. Makes emergency road calls. 3. Inspects diesel-powered school buses and other mechanical equipment such as automobiles, trucks and mowers. 4. Diagnoses trouble and determines extent of necessary repairs. 5. Makes all types of repairs on gasoline and diesel equipment, such as major and minor engine overhauls, adjusting and repairing transmissions and differentials replacing and adjusting valves and bearings, adjusting and repairing fuel systems, ignitions and carburetors, relining and adjusting brakes, rebuilding bus air compressors and the like. 6. Keeps records of time and materials used and work performed. 7. Confers with supervisory personnel in planning overall maintenance program of District vehicles. 8. Follows District safety procedures in shop area. 9. Performs other duties as may be assigned. Qualifications Guide Knowledge of: 1. Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of automotive equipment and of fuel, ignition electrical and cooling systems. Page 1 of 2 JD 4200.1 2. Methods, materials and equipment used in diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines. 3. California Vehicle Code and laws pertaining to school buses. 4. Safe driving practices. 5. Safe work practices. 6. Principles of supervision. Ability to: 1. Make mechanical repairs to a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment. 2. Diagnose automotive and related mechanical equipment problems. 3. Skillfully perform required mechanical repair to a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment. 4. Estimate costs. 5. Read and prepare schematics and diagrams. 6. Perform heavy physical labor. 7. Safely and efficiently operate a school bus. 8. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 9. Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Training and Experience One year of journey level experience in the repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment; equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by vocational training in diesel and automotive trades; good driving record; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Licenses Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class B; and the ability to qualify for District vehicle insurance coverage. REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATE: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class B; and the ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage
