ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

 

THE POSITION

 

Under general supervision, teaches large groups of students, at two (2) or more school sites, in the field of Physical Education to elementary aged students, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:            Site Principals and Administrator on Special Assignment   

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical education to elementary school students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum.
  • Plans and implements lessons for elementary students that develop motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Works with elementary students to ensure understanding of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
  • Plans and implements an age appropriate physical education program that assists students in assessing and maintaining a level of physical fitness needed to improve health and performance.
  • Teaches students physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies that improve health and performance.
  • Plans and implements lessons and activities that introduce students to the psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
  • Conducts all required state and federal physical fitness assessments.
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Adapts daily schedules to accommodate weather conditions and to provide time for instructions, exercise and physical activities.
  • Plans and implements routines for transitions to and from physical education instruction that maximize instructional time.
  • Provides individual and cooperative group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the pupils with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Exhibits appropriate conduct in the handling of student emergencies.
  • Maintains school standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment, in cooperation with the school administration.
  • Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Works with District and site staff to selects and requisition materials, equipment, books, etc., which support the District curriculum, and maintains inventory records.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method he/she will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines and state law.
  • Communicates with parents and relevant school staff regarding student progress and attends related meetings as necessary.
  • Participates in faculty meetings and/or elementary physical education program meetings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

  • Valid California Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned.

 

Training and Experience:

  • Student teaching, internship, or full time teaching experience.

 

Personal Qualities:

  • Appearance, grooming and personality, which establish a desirable example for students.
  • Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.
