ANAHEIM CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT Human Resources CLASS TITLE: SPECIAL DAY CLASS TEACHER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Principal and the Director of Special Education, teach children with various disabling conditions. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Deliver a daily academic program to pupils in a special class on a regular school campus. E Develop individual and group behavior management programs. E Develop and implement individualized educational programs in cooperation with parents and other team members. E Plan and implement appropriate integration experiences for pupils. E Provide individualized instruction in appropriate areas of pre-academics/academics, language, self-help, motor, pre-vocational, and socialization skills as appropriate. E Collaborate, as needed, with other professionals involved in the program for the child with disabilities, such as Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Psychologists, and regular classroom teachers. E Adjust educational schedule on an individual basis to coordinate with OT, PT, speech therapist and regular classroom teacher. E Communicate with parents. E Assess, create, adapt and apply learning methods and materials to meet needs of the children. E Train and guide Special Education Assistants assigned to the program. E Assist pupils with personal care and physical needs, such as toileting, positioning, feeding, administering medication, monitoring dietary restrictions and others, as specified by the child’s physician and directed by the school nurse. E Participate as a member of the IEP Team in assessing and planning activities for pupils enrolled in program. E Collaborate with agencies providing services to participating students. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Child guidance principles and practices related to students with special education needs. Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP goals. Equipment operation related to special education students. Terminology involved in special education programs. Principles of training and providing work direction. Proper lifting techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Research methods and report writing techniques. Basic computer operation. First aid and CPR. IEP process. Behavior modification techniques. Student and parent rights with respect to special education programs. ABILITY TO: Perform specialized physical health care procedures to assist high-risk students. Instruct special education students in individualized tasks to achieve IEP goals. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Operate and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment. Monitor and evaluate student progress. Train and provide work direction to others. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Compile and verify data and prepare reports. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and time lines. Lift, carry, push, pull or move heavy equipment. Sit for extended periods of time. Run, walk or stand for brief periods. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Assist children with mobility. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: bachelor’s degree and teacher certification related to students served. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Teaching Credential with CLAD or BCLAD authorization and instruction in a Special Education Program for students with mild to severe disabilities. Applicants who have not worked in a certificated position for a California public school district within the last 39 months must include a copy of their California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) verification card with their employment application. Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom environment. HAZARDS: Providing specialized physical health care procedures to students with exposure to body fluids.
