DESCRIPTION:
Instructs and reinforces appropriate bus riding behaviors and may implement specific behavioral modification programs with students while they ride the bus to and from school.
Examples of Duties:
Rides an assigned bus, sitting with the students to and from school; escorts students from bus to the classroom upon arrival at school and from the classroom to the bus upon departure from school, as required; instructs and reinforces appropriate bus riding behaviors which include rules regarding safety and good manners; implements specific behavioral objectives with individual students to shape behavior toward appropriate bus riding behaviors; charts students’ performances on the bus for report to parents and teachers on a daily, weekly or other designated reporting basis; performs bus cleaning and inspection duties such as washing of windows, trash removal, cleaning of seating surfaces, etc. as required; performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
• Requires an understanding of the policies and procedures for instructing and enforcing appropriate bus riding behavior.
• Requires sufficient human relations skill to achieve harmony with a small group of children
• Behavior management strategies
AND
Ability to:
• Incumbent must be able to demonstrate patience and composure sufficient to monitor and control the behavior of children, including those with special needs.
• Requires the ability to perform basic record keeping duties in order to report student performance on a routine basis.
AND
Training and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED is required. Previous experience working with children in an unstructured group setting is preferred. Reading and writing skills sufficient to prepare basic reports is required.
AND
• TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and valid ARC first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate.
Physical Abilities:
• Lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to a minimum of 100 pounds with a strength factor of moderately heavy work.
• Frequent bending at the waist and kneeling, squatting, or crouching.
• Finger dexterity sufficient to fasten harness and seat belts and securing wheelchairs to bus.
• Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the radio
• Reaching, pulling, and pushing to operate bus doors.
• Lifting moderately heavy objects.
• Maintain balance while standing on the bus while bus is in motion, starting, or stopping.
• See to read a variety of materials and to assist students.
• Possess strength and physical dexterity to pull children from bus in case of accident.
• Climbing a minimum of 5 steps to enter and exit the school bus.
