SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SENIOR GROUNDSKEEPER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Grounds Manager, supervise, schedule and participate with a groundskeeping crew in the maintenance and beautification of grounds and landscaped areas of the District. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position differs from a Groundskeeper in that incumbents may be assigned to supervise the groundskeeping function at the high school level or direct the groundskeeping efforts of the District traveling grounds¬keeping crew. Incumbents assigned to a school maintain grounds and furnish work direction to the Groundskeeper assigned to that school. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Supervise, schedule and work with a groundskeeping crew. E Trim and top trees and shrubs; remove trees as necessary. E Pick up and deliver landscaping supplies to schools or District Office. E Prepare soil including rototilling, and plant trees, lawn, and plants. E Prepare field and turf areas for re_surfacing. E Spray for weeds in athletic fields, fence lines, blacktop edges and areas near buildings. E Prepare turf areas for play equipment installation, including digging pits, installing boards, filling with sand and other activities. E Dig trenches for sprinkler repair and installation. E Operate backfill equipment as necessary; operate saws, cutters, hand pruning devices, mower, edger, blowers and power sweepers. E Move asphalt and concrete as necessary; clean exterior drains and remove leaves and paper from walks and patios, flower beds and other areas. E Check, service, and clean vehicles and equipment. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials and equipment used in groundskeeping activities. Tree trimming and landscaping. Methods of preparing soils for planting. Varieties of insecticides and proper usage. Tools and methods used in marking fields. Health and safety regulations. ABILITY TO: Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work cooperatively with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Train and supervise personnel. Plan and supervise work. Meet schedules and time lines. Lift heavy objects. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to three years of increasingly responsible groundskeeping experience. Completion of course work in landscaping or gardening desirable. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors and pollen. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate groundskeeping tools and equipment. Walking and standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects, not normally exceeding sixty (60) pounds. Heavy physical labor. Seeing to perform groundskeeping work. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate groundskeeping tools and equipment.
