DESCRIPTION • As part of a middle school teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of mathematics to students in grades 6-8, and assists in other school programs as assigned. Under the immediate direction of the school principal the teacher will perform: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE • Teaches courses in mathematics to middle school students utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content. • Instructs students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. • Develop, when applicable and as facilities permit, lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing “discovery” and laboratory learning methods. • Demonstrates, in so far as possible, mathematical concepts using modes. Chalk board, overhead projector, and other standard of teacher-prepared instructional aids. • Provides opportunities, as class size permits, for individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. • Designs learning activities that will relate mathematics to the physical world. • Establishes and maintains, with the cooperation of the school administration, standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. • Evaluates each student’s progress in mathematical knowledge and skills, and prepares progress reports. May prepare letters of recommendation for college application, etc. • Maintains professional competence through participation in inservie education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities. • May select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records. • Communicates with parents to interpret contemporary methods in teaching mathematics and with parents and school counselors to discuss the individual student’s progress. • Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. • Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required. • Shares in the sponsorship of student activities. • Participates in faculty and parent meetings. • May plan and coordinate the work of teacher aides or student teachers. • Performs other concomitant duties as may be reasonably assigned. MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED • Current California credential authorizing the subject matter or information indicating eligibility to receive one. • CLAD/BCLAD or equivalent required. • Be NCLB compliant. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS • Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisor or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainments, and classroom performance of the teacher.
