SHASTA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT Class Specification MAINTENANCE WORKER I Class Summary Under supervision, to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work; to maintain school buildings, facilities, appurtenances and accessories; to check, service, clean and maintain swimming pools; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are assigned a variety of tasks in the building trades. Although work requires the use of journeyman's tools and the ability to perform operations in several of the crafts, the skill required in any one field is normally less than would be required of a journeyman in that field. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Makes routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to school buildings and facilities; repairs doors and windows and installs hardware; straightens and repairs lockers; makes repairs to desks, chairs and other furniture and equipment; builds shelves; paints doors, walls, pools, or other appurtenances; removes and replaces faucets and fixtures; replaces washers and gaskets; clears clogged lines; replaces fuses, fixtures, sockets and switches; makes minor wiring repairs; checks, services and maintains swimming pool and equipment; does rough concrete work; welds; checks and services boilers; may assist in large, complex projects involving the services of journeymen tradesmen; may operate light trucks or other equipment to pick up or deliver equipment and supplies; may perform general custodial or groundskeeping work. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade and good work history indicating reliability and dependability; and one year of experience in the performance of building maintenance duties. KNOWLEDGE OF Basic operations and tools employed in building maintenance work; general safety practices and procedures. ABILITY TO Learn to perform general maintenance duties; perform heavy manual labor; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. LICENSES Some positions may require a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. PHYSICAL Good physical condition as determined by pre- and post-employment health reports.
