Merced Union High School District Guidance Counselor Primary Function: To assist in managing the learning of students and to provide services to the administration, teachers, students, and parents in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Board of Trustees and in compliance with the laws of California; to assist students to secure the knowledge and skills needed to make adequate decisions, plans, and interpretations regarding personal, academic, and career choices. Supervision: Reports to the Assistant Principal. Requirements Necessary to Perform Typical Duties: Training - California Pupil Personnel Credential Authorizing Service as a School Counselor. Experience – Background in Personal, Academic, and Career Counseling. Typical Duties Performed: 1. Meet with students and parents to discuss and develop an academic program for the student. 2. Hold conferences with students who exhibit academic, social and/or emotional problems, which adversely affect educational development. 3. Recommends and arranges educational and special program placement for students in consultation with parents, teachers and administration. 4. Investigates attendance patterns of students and recommends corrective action. 5. Administers or supervises the administration of tests as assigned. 6. Discusses college application and scholarship information with students, parents and appropriate staff. 7. Collaborates with other certificated personnel and community agencies in an attempt to resolve problems of students. 8. Communicates with parents regarding the progress of students. 9. Supervises students as directed by the principal or assistant principal. 10. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service training activities provided by the district and in self-directed professional growth activities. 11. Assists in interpreting the school program and its curriculum to parents and citizens in order to promote greater understanding among community groups of school objectives, accomplishments, and problems. 12. Abides by all policies of the Board of Trustees. 13. Other duties as assigned by the assistant principal.
