Job Summary

Under general supervision of the instructor, in a classroom or vocational health/medical facility, assists students individually or in groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives; to act as a technical assistant to the teacher in performing assigned tasks which will make learning more effective; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Vocational Technician will have beyond two years of occupational experience as a Medical Assistant, Nurse Assistant or Patient Care Technician. CMA, CNA, LVN or RN preferred. His/her major function is to assist with instruction of students on an individualized basis in developing specific technical skills. Incumbent must exhibit skills pertaining to the medical program; i.e., CPR, First Aid, vital signs, bath, and bed making.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • CMA or CNA. L.V.N. or R.N., preferred • Have minimum of 2 years’ experience in the medical field. • Possess a valid California driver's license. • Some verifiable work experience with youth. Pass an instructional Aide proficiency test or two years of higher education (48 units) or have an Associate's or higher degree.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in the areas of: • Assist teacher with various skills pertaining to the Medical Careers program; i.e., C.P.R., First Aid, vital signs, bath, and bed making. • Record grades in grade book; keeping attendance records, ordering supplies, and keeping other program records, as required. • Community and training site public relations for the program's growth and community awareness. Works independently in the areas of: • Trainee placement at training site. • Caring for immediate student problems; i.e., inappropriate attitude or behavior. • Counsels with trainer or student if evaluation is requested. • Communicating training supervisor's requests regarding program and/or students to the instructor. • Familiar with college requirements, including knowledge of the training and educational skills necessary for the student's success in job placement and further training or education. • Working with interested departments to develop new training sites or updating training site plans. • Continuing to update professional skills to keep abreast of health field in general. • Taking responsibility for student health and safety while in the training site, including seeking medical aid, initiating medical paperwork when needed, and notifying parents and school administration. • Personal safety of patients while students are in the training site areas. • Transporting students to community resource stations on occasion when necessary. • Working in small groups and individually with students in both problem solving and training-related situations. • Additional tasks and responsibilities to aid the betterment of the ROP program, such as attendance at community health/education programs and the Health Fair.
