The Lakeside Union School District Board (LUSD) of Trustees invites highly qualified organizational leaders to apply for the position of District Superintendent. The successful candidate will have a strong leadership background and possess an unwavering commitment to provide an exemplary education to all students. A qualified candidate is interested in having a long tenure in the district, an involvement in the vibrant community of Lakeside, CA and is respectful of the district’s history and culture. LUSD has 9 schools serving approximately 4,500 students in grades preschool through 12th grade. There are seven elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (grades 6-8), and two charter schools. The District is located 20 miles east of downtown San Diego. Candidates are advised not to make personal contact with any individual members of the Board of Trustees regarding this position.

The Position:
As Chief Executive Officer, the Superintendent of Schools provides District-wide educational leadership through staff of the District, the Governing Board and the community.  Carrying out this resonsibility, the Superintendent works primarily with the development, interpretation and implementation of District policy, rules and regulations.  The Superintendent is responsible for managing the District and all of its functions in such a way that they are self-diagnosing, auto-correcting, self-renewing operations.  As Chief Administrative Officer, the Superintendent keeps the Board informed of problems and progress regarding the overall development and improvement of the District's educational services to students and the community.
Lakeside is looking for a superintendent whose cognitive abilities, interests and personality dynamics fit those required by the district.  Applicants must have a positive orientation to the nature of the work to be performed, the characteristics of the district's work environment, and the other demands and conditions of the position.  A high level of emotional competencies, soft skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills and motivation is desired.

The District serves approximately 4500 students employing 296 certificated staff and 370 classified staff serving in eight elementary schools, two middle schools,
three charter schools. River Valley Charter, grades 7-12, Barona Charter, grades K-8.
  
The Community
Lakeside is in the unincorporated area of San Diego County, approximately 20 miles east of the City of San Diego and bordered by the cities of Santee, El Cajon, Alpine and Ramona. Nearly 54,000 people reside in the 75 square miles encompassed by the District.  
The region, while primarily rural/suburban in nature, has an expanding business component due to the number of light industry and independent businesses electing to locate in the area. Lakeside's central location, with easy access to the educational and cultural advantages of San Diego and the vast recreational offerings of mountains, desert and beaches, contributes to the attractiveness of the Lakeside District as a highly desirable place to live and work.
  
Professional Skills:
  • Promote the vision, mission and programs of the District for the purpose of improving student learning and educational excellence;
  • Anticipate and analyze major issues and make clear recommendations to the Board based on sound educational and fiscal considerations;
  • Possess excellent organizational and management skills with an understanding of current issues in education and the ability to exercise leadership in finding solutions to those problems;
  • Possess team management skills that can take from all aspects of staff and community and bring together to enhance the education program;
  • Provide evidence of recent experience and knowledge in budget development and management and Bond management; 
  • Lead the District in exhibiting the personal and professional skills that will unite the District by respecting and responding to interests and concerns of all constituents;
  • Possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Successful experience in creating a district climate of cooperation and collaboration with a management style that supports interest-based bargaining.

Selection Procedure:

A screening committee appointed by the Board of Trustees will evaluate the qualifications of each candidate.  Selection criteria will include qualifications stated above as well as additional criteria adopted by the Board upon community and staff input.  Interviews will consist of one task, two panels, one with the Board of Trustees, and one stakeholder panel. 

Members of the Board may visit the communities of the leading candidates to gather information regarding performance.  It is anticipated that the new Superintendent will be selected in May 2025.

Salary and Contract

It is the intent of the Governing Board to offer a competitive beginning yearly salary.  The Governing Board intends to offer the successful candidate a multi-year contract.

The successful candidate will be required to provide the District with employment eligibility and verification of citizenship in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
