CENTRAL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Crossing Guard
Classification: Classified
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Site Administrator
Range: Classified Salary Schedule
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities above.
SUMMARY
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, escort school children safely across designated street intersections; assist in directing traffic to and from school grounds.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Escort children across street at designated locations; utilize due caution and display crossing sign.
2. Assist in directing traffic to and from school grounds; communicate with drivers regarding appropriate parking areas.
3. Prevent children from crossing street during the flow of traffic until it is safe to cross.
4. Report license numbers of cars for traffic violations to the District; report unusual, unsafe, dangerous or improper conduct, along with license number according to established procedures; file reports for traffic violations as necessary.
5. Answer questions regarding street and school locations.
6. Notify police, school authorities and ambulance in case of injuries or accidents at designated crossing.
7. Perform related duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Of:
-Traffic regulations, especially those pertaining to pedestrians.
-Stopping distances of moving vehicles.
-Student behavior management strategies and techniques.
Ability to:
-Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward elementary age children.
-Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
-Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
-Display sufficient stamina to permit performance of duties in inclement weather.
-Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Outdoor environment.
Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.
Standing for extended periods of time.
Walking.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Seeing to monitor children.
Traffic hazards.
