TEACHER - SPEECH/LANGUAGE SPECIALIST
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, teaches students with disorders or deviations of language, speech, or hearing, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student's ability.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under the supervision of the school site administrator, to help reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interfere with a student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Screens and assesses students for speech/language classes; develops and implements appropriate remedial techniques for each student as indicated on the Individualized Education Program (IEP); consults with administrators, teachers, parents and other professional personnel concerning speech, language, and hearing problems; maintains student records as required by the District and Special Education Master Plan; refers students to the community agencies as appropriate; arranges and participates in IEP; is a resource in the area of speech/language to staff and parents; provides inservice in the area of speech/language as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:
Appropriate diagnostic and screening tools in the area of speech/language;
Appropriate materials to be used with specific deficiencies at the various grade levels;
Special Education Master Plan;
Teaching and learning processes;
Child growth and development.
Ability to:
Interact effectively with staff, students, parents, and community;
Clearly communicate orally and in writing;
Accept criticism and grow as a result;
Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills;
Assess and diagnose speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments;
Evaluate progress and keep appropriate records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university including all courses needed to meet requirements for a teaching credential authorizing service in the grade levels and areas assigned.
Experience:
Successful teaching experience, internship, or student teaching.
REQUIRED CREDENTIALS AND CERTIFICATES
Valid California teaching credential authorizing service in the grade levels or areas assigned and a Clinical Rehabilitation Credential with authorizations in Language, Speech, and Hearing.

Valid Credential with authorizations in Language, Speech, and Hearing. ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence desired. Those applicants evidencing the best qualifications will be invited for an interview evaluation. All candidates will be notified following final selection. Qualified applicants may be placed on an eligibility list.
