SHASTA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
POSITION: FOOD SERVICE WORKER
Purpose
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the assigned supervisor and guidance of the Lead Cook, perform a variety of activities in support of food service operations including pick-up, delivery, storage and distribution of food items; Assist in preparation and cooking of meals and food items for students and assist with service at professional development.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Ensure proper and timely distribution of food items and supplies.
Prepare and serve food; and clean up special events as assigned.
Assist the lead cook to ensure that meals provided to students meet the Child Nutrition Program guidelines.
Assist in the observation of quality and quantity of food served according to established procedures and in compliance with established health and safety standards and regulations.
Drive a vehicle to various locations to pick up and deliver food items and supplies; distribute food items and supplies to site personnel; load and unload shipments of food items and supplies.
Prepare food items for distribution to other sites: assemble various ingredients; prepare, cook, and package food items according to established procedures and portion control standards.
Maintain food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition; clean counters, tables, food containers, storage areas, refrigerators, freezers and food service equipment; operate dish washers and wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils and other serving equipment as assigned.
Place, shelve and store food items in racks, coolers, refrigerators, storage areas or freezers as required; monitor and ensure proper temperature of food items; rotate perishable and nonperishable inventory as needed; ensure food shipments are not spoiled or damaged.
Assist in preparation for baking and cooking of foods from scratch; assemble various ingredients.
Operate standard food service equipment such as slicers, ovens, can openers, food carts and warmers.
Load and drive delivery vehicle to transport food to various sites; ensure delivery vehicle is clean, fueled and serviced in a timely manner.
Assist in monitoring inventory levels of food service supplies; assist with ordering, receiving, storing and rotating food items and supplies.
Participate in continuous educational trainings that are assigned.
Assist in maintaining routine records related to assigned activities.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food items and ingredients.
Sanitation and safety practices related to preparing, handling and serving food.
Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
Safe work practices.
Oral and written communication skills.
Basic math.
Proper lifting techniques.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO:
Utilize a computer to perform entry-level transactions and input data as assigned.
Operate standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Work cooperatively with others.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Make basic math computations.
Assist with routine records maintenance related to work performed.
Ability to drive a vehicle safely and in accordance with traffic laws over a variety of normal and hazardous road conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: High school diploma or G.E.D; equivalent and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
