ASSISTANT TRADESPERSON

DEFINITION:
The Assistant Tradesperson position, under general supervision of the Building Maintenance
Supervisor, requires the performance of a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work on
District buildings, facilities and equipment, and may also require assisting other tradespersons
as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Performs maintenance repairs or replacements within the crafts of plumbing,
heating, painting, carpentry, electricity, metalwork, masonry and mechanical fields.
• Performs more complex repairs or replacements in several crafts.
• Assists Maintenance Tradespersons in completing work for which the Maintenance
Tradesperson is responsible.
• Accomplishes tasks requiring the use of standard materials and common
maintenance tools.
• Performs skilled manual tasks.
• Assists in reading blueprints and works according to plans and specifications.
• Performs preventive maintenance service to buildings and equipment as assigned.
• Reports to supervisor unsafe and otherwise adverse conditions that exist.
• Performs related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Methods, equipment and materials used to assist tradespersons.
• Requirements of maintaining buildings, and facilities in good repair.
• Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Perform skilled maintenance and repair.
• Drive District vehicle.
• Observe health and safety regulations.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Three years of maintenance and/or trade experience.
• Experience and knowledge in two or more crafts.
• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
• Forklift certification may be required.
• Special training or coursework desirable.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This type of work may involve
carrying, lifting, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects, ascending and descending
ladders, stairs, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods. There
may also be regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, cleaning agents and chemicals. Exposure
to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be
experienced. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
