SPEECH PATHOLOGIST
DESCRIPTION:
Within the scope of the district’s adopted philosophy and goals and to the extent the district establishes and maintains support services and optimum conditions, the Speech Pathologist, under the direction of Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Personnel and in cooperation with the Special Education Coordinator is responsible to provide a thorough assessment, diagnosis and evaluation of each child’s speech, language and/or hearing disorder and to provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs. In meeting these individual needs, coordination of services at all levels has been found to be extremely important.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Must possess or be eligible for the appropriate California Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential. Successful Speech/Hearing Pathology experience which would demonstrate exposure to and utilization of required skills, knowledge and abilities in performing job duties and responsibilities is desirable.
Demonstrated Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Appropriate knowledge of young adolescents and the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs; appropriate knowledge, understanding and skill to effectively deal with responsibilities. Working knowledge, interest and keen sense of fairness with respect to all segments of the specified programs i.e., academics, special programs, athletics, etc.. Ability and understanding with respect to master schedule, evaluation techniques, supervision, curriculum, budget, attendance accounting, school law, and special programs; ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals; capable of maintaining a good public image. Willingness to set a high standard of discipline for students and hold them accountable for their actions.; willingness to set high standards for self, students and staff. Understanding and appreciation for the various special support programs and the value of each toward the total effort.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Identifying children with speech, hearing an language impairments.
2. Following initial assessment with continued on-going assessment after enrollment of the students in the speech and hearing program.
3. Determining whether the student should be enrolled in group or individual therapy sessions in offering speech and hearing therapy.
4. Providing therapy to children with problems.
5. Working directly with the principal, who is responsible for providing a room and office facility for the specialist.
6. Coordinating the program in each school so that all school personnel are well informed of the speech and hearing program’s objectives, procedures, etc…
7. Referring students to other educational or health agencies.
8. Providing consultation services to parents and teachers.
9. Coordination and exchanging ideas through conference and visitation with the county supervisor and school district supervisors.
10. Following recommendation from the supervisors to meet specific needs of the program, encouraging and participating in advanced study in the field, and fulfilling certification requirements in pertinent professional organizations.
11. Constantly assessing program needs so that the public school program is continually being improved and upgraded.
12. Performs other duties as needed, directed, required or as necessary to promote a successful program.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
1. Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines.
2. Able to conduct verbal conversation.
3. Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels).
4. Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk for sustained periods of time.
5. Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders.
6. Able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
7. Able to carry up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
8. Able to operate office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
9. Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate calculator, typewriter and /or computer keyboard at the required speed and accuracy.
10. Able to obtain and maintain a required valid drivers license.
11. Able to drive out of town for meetings, conferences, recruitment, etc..
Requirements / Qualifications
