DEFINITION OF POSITION:

Under general supervision, to operate and maintain a variety of power grounds equipment; to perform complex groundskeeping maintenance and gardening functions and activities.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Operates, maintains, services and performs adjustments and routine repairs to a variety of power grounds equipment, including large gang mowers, lawn vacuums, edgers, trimmers, trucks, tractors and light utility vehicles;
  • Performs complex groundskeeping maintenance and gardening functions and activities;
  • Operates a tractor utilizing a variety of attachments performing skilled operational functions;
  • May assist in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of sprinkler and irrigation systems;
  • Performs groundskeeping and maintenance functions and activities to athletic fields and activity areas for athletic events, including dragging, leveling, rolling, lining and other related tasks;
  • May spray for weeds and insect control;
  • May set-up and dismantle gymnasium equipment;
  • Prepares and fertilizes soil and plants lawns and a variety of flowers, trees and shrubs;
  • May trim and prune plants, shrubs and trees;
  • May operate medium duty equipment, such as tractors, mowers, trucks, forklifts, skiploaders and trenchers;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and experience:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, plus two years experience in the operation of tractors, trucks and large power mowers.  Additionally, must be able to perform complex grounds maintenance, groundskeeping and gardening work.

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, tools and large power equipment used in grounds maintenance, groundskeeping and gardening work; operation and routine maintenance of large power grounds equipment; safe working methods and procedures.

Ability to:

Perform complex grounds maintenance, groundskeeping and gardening work; operate and maintain a variety of large power grounds equipment and tools safely and skillfully; performs heavy manual activities related to grounds maintenance, groundskeeping and gardening work; install, maintain and repair sprinkler systems; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. 

LICENSE:

Valid California Class C Driver’s License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

Outdoor work environment; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases; driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Demands:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance equipment; bending at the waist, kneeling, stooping or crouching; walking or standing for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; digging; lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects as assigned by position; heavy physical labor; seeing to perform grounds work; hearing and speaking to exchange information.

Hazards:

Working around and with machinery having moving parts; exposure to chemicals used in pest control and weed abatement.
