GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Director of Food Services or the Cafeteria Coordinator/Head Cook the Food Service Assistant is to assist in the preparation, cooking and/or service of scratch cooking of food in large quantities and participate in kitchen’s daily operations. Assist in maintaining the kitchen in a clean and sanitary condition and perform related work as required. Receives daily work assignments from the Cafeteria Coordinator/Head Cook. ? General knowledge of the principles of sanitation, food safety and food preparation in large quantities. ? Ability to work effectively with co-workers, district staff and parents. ? Education: Equivalent to completion of 12th grade Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. Works collaboratively in maintaining the standards required by the Health Department in food quality, sanitation, safety and efficiency within the kitchen. ? Transport, move, or rotate food for freshness or temperature control. ? Operate a variety of kitchen equipment and appliances. ? Open and empty cans, boxes or other food containers. ? Move items from freezer to defrosting area. ? Unload and transfer food from commodity truck pallets to commodity freezer and dry storage. ? Participate in the preparation of food. ? Set up for service of meals. ? Set up, and operate equipment for refrigeration, storage, cooking, mixing, heating and baking. ? Serve to each age group of children the portion requirements set forth by the State Department of Education and the National School Lunch Program. ? Clean and sanitize such items as work areas, tabletops, chairs, serving counters, equipment, or utensils and dispose of refuse or waste properly. ? Operate serving line,

Requirements / Qualifications

High school graduate or the equivalent. Knowledge of principles of sanitation, food safety, and food preparation in large quantities. Must complete Serve Safe Certification upon hiring. Possess the ability to work positively and effectively with students, families, school personnel, and other community agencies.
