HEALTH SERVICES CLERK
DEFINITION:
The Health Services Clerk, under general supervision of the Site Administrator and an assigned
School Nurse, provides a variety of health services at School sites and District Office;
coordinates and schedules vision, hearing and other health screening programs; prepares and
maintains related records, files and reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Assists in providing a variety of health services including First Aid and health checks
for students; assists in evaluation and documentation of student health complaints and
determines appropriate action to be taken; assists with implementation of District
Policy regarding medication at school; maintains related records and reports using a
computerized system.
• Instructs students on proper personal hygiene; attends to students needing assistance
with changing clothes and using the restroom; checks students for head lice as
directed and notifies parents of results.
• Performs the basic clerical operations of a health office including maintaining and
ordering health office supplies and First Aid kits.
• Maintains accurate records of pupil injuries, illnesses, health problems, and vision
and hearing screening.
• Monitors and keeps track of students with special circumstances (disabled, diabetic,
asthmatic, seizure disorders, etc).
• Processes incoming health records of new students; verifies compliance with State
regulations for immunizations and Child Health and Disability Prevention Program
(CHDP) physicals; notifies parents by letter of needed immunizations for school
admission.
• Informs teachers of student disability.
• Assists students/teachers with obtaining homework for sick students.
• Maintains the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
• Performs related tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Current First Aid methods and appropriate response to illness and injury.
• Clean and sterile treatment techniques.
• Personal hygiene practices.
• Current computer applications.
• Modern office organization, procedures and practices.
• Routine procedures of record keeping.
• Telephone etiquette.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Administer First Aid and medications according to established procedures.
• Perform a variety of basic clerical work with accuracy and speed.
• Work under conditions of frequent interruptions and deadlines.
• Maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with students, parents and
staff.
• Type at a net corrected speed of 40 words per minute.
• Make clear and comprehensive reports and keep simple records.
• Operate standard office equipment.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Observe health and safety regulations
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification desirable.
• Experience in health care service environment desirable.
