ACALANES UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of clerical library duties involved in the circulation, maintenance, processing and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned school site; monitor and provide assistance to students in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform a variety of clerical library duties involved in the circulation, maintenance, processing and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned school site; process new library books and instructional materials; oversee the cataloguing of books and instructional materials. Assist students and teachers in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; respond to inquiries and provide information to students and teachers; assist students in researching instructional materials for classroom use. Circulate library materials; check library books and instructional materials in and out to students and staff using an assigned computerized system; shelve returned books and materials; check audio-visual and other instructional equipment in and out to staff as assigned. Receive, process and store textbooks and library materials as assigned; catalog and prepare books, periodicals and other materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare barcodes, cards and identification labels; affix identification and labels to materials. Compile information and prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to library books, instructional materials, students, circulation, overdue materials, inventory and assigned activities. Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library; assure student compliance with established library rules and policies; oversee, train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants. Input and update circulation and various other data in an assigned computer system; utilize computer to extract and verify data and information; establish and maintain automated records and files; initiate queries and generate computerized reports. Assist students with utilizing copiers, computers and peripherals; advise students in proper methods of utilizing library and reference materials and systems. Calculate and collect fees for lost or overdue books as needed; generate and distribute lost or overdue book notices to students and parents. Monitor inventory levels of textbooks, library books, equipment, instructional materials and other supplies as assigned; order books, equipment, textbooks and other instructional materials as directed; participate in periodic inventories; prepare textbooks for circulation as assigned. Communicate with students, District personnel, various outside agencies and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Operate a variety of office and library equipment such as copiers, fax machines, typewriters, laminators, computers, peripherals and assigned software; maintain and perform minor repairs on library computers, copiers and printers as assigned. Prepare and distribute a variety of correspondence as required; generate requisitions as directed; maintain and update textbook, library material, price and various other lists. Organize and prepare library displays, decorations and bulletin boards as required; maintain the library in a neat and orderly condition Mend and repair damaged books; purge obsolete materials as needed. Participate in a variety of other assigned activities such as maintaining periodical subscriptions and overseeing testing activities. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: General functions, operations and maintenance of school libraries. Library practices, procedures, reference materials, resources and terminology. Library cataloging and classification including card catalogs and the Dewey Decimal system. Filing, indexing and inventory procedures. Record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Operation of a computer and assigned software. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Electronic cataloging software and internet research techniques related to library matters. ABILITY TO: Perform a variety of clerical library duties involved in the circulation, maintenance, processing and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned school site. Provide technical information and assistance to students, faculty and others concerning the research, selection, location and use of library materials and equipment. Oversee the cataloguing of books and instructional materials. Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library. Provide training and assistance to students concerning the operation of library computers and related peripheral equipment and software applications. Process and shelve library materials. Inventory, order, receive and assist in the selection of instructional materials. Check library materials in and out to students and staff. Calculate and collect fees for lost or overdue books as needed. Operate a computer and assigned software. Maintain files and records and prepare reports. Work independently with little direction. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years clerical or library experience including work with computer operations and library circulation functions. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School library environment. Constant interruptions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Lifting and moving offices supplies and boxes. **The Education Code requires that a criminal background check be conducted on all persons prior to employment by a school district to ascertain whether the applicant has been arrested or convicted of any crime.
