DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services and the site administrator, the school counselor provides a variety of support services to their school. This includes direct counseling to classes, small groups and individuals, parent education, and consultation with parents, staff, and related agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Pupil Personnel Services Credential with authorization in counseling
- Fingerprint Certificate of Clearance from the Department of Justice
- Understands basic laws and procedures regarding Special Education and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
- Demonstrates knowledge of the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to children, families, and pupil personnel services
- Communicates with, and relates well to parents, students, staff and community
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Implements the mission, vision, objectives and course of study of the Mill Valley School District as appropriate
- Counsels individual and small groups of students on social, emotional, and academic concerns
- Maintains appropriate confidentiality
- Utilizes individual and group counseling techniques that promote student success
- Works with students to resolve conflicts and to teach conflict resolution skills
- Works with parents to support the academic and social success of their children
- Participates in school-wide parent education efforts
- Supports and counsels staff and students during time of crisis or grief
- Uses appropriate referral processes for alternative programs, as well as educational and counseling options in the community
- Coordinates and supervises counseling interns when appropriate
- Participates in SST meetings, 504 plan meetings, and IEP meetings when appropriate
- Participates in district-wide counseling department meetings
- Keeps current on work, parent communications, and technological proficiencies
- Creates and implements social-emotional programs for students
- Consults with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel regarding the social/emotional needs of students, effective classroom management techniques, provides relevant background information on students, facilitates the appropriate educational placement of students, and provides reinforcement of appropriate school behavior
- Plans and develops a school-based counseling program which provides direct services to students, staff, parents/guardians, and the community; this includes integration into the educational curriculum where appropriate
- Assists in the referral process and transference of relevant student information to and from appropriate school, district, and/or community agencies or individual practitioners
- Coordinates and participates in articulation activities between elementary, middle, and high school
- Maintains professional competence through participation in professional growth activities
- Participates cooperatively with their administrator to develop the method by which they will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines
- Supervises student out-of-classroom activities
- Participates in school-wide adjunct duties, as determined by site needs
- Keeps current on work email
- Performs other duties as assignee
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is characterized as a K-8 public education organization, and may include travel between schools.

The employee will be evaluated by the site administrator or designee.
