DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Senior Director, Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), as a member of the Visual Impairment Program of Foothill SELPA, the Braille Transcriber prepares braille transcriptions required by elementary and secondary level students with visual impairments who need to access educational materials in alternative formats.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Braille Transcriber prepares braille transcriptions for students using a variety of technical equipment and skills and by adhering to techniques, standards, and procedures set forth by the Braille Authority of North America, National Braille Association, and the SELPA.
The Senior Director, SELPA directs, coordinates, and provides support services to three districts (Burbank USD, Glendale USD and La Canada USD) in the area of program curriculum, personnel development, and budget planning and review. Coordinates interagency and program agreements, evaluation, and legal assistance. Acts as a liaison between districts and the State Department of Education. Promotes community awareness and supports the Community Advisory Committee (CAC).
A SELPA Staff Assistant performs complex and responsible office work involved in planning, organizing, and participating in the operations of the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) office.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Immediate supervision is provided by the Senior Director, SELPA.
No supervision is exercised over district or SELPA employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Operate standard office equipment including computers utilizing specialized software applications, keyboards, other braille devices, large print scanners, enlarging photocopier embossers, and other peripheral equipment and aids to transcribe a variety of elementary and secondary level instructional materials into braille for use by students with visual impairments.
Prepare transcriptions utilizing textbook formatting rules, literary Braille Code, and/or Nemeth Code.
Work closely with certificated staff to ensure that materials are prepared appropriately and accurately for students with visual impairments.
Design and produce tactile graphic representations of print material.
Mange low-incidence materials such as related educational equipment, including ordering supplies, logging, assigning to school sites, recovering, and receiving them.
Maintain and monitor recordkeeping systems and files to include inventory for braille or large print materials and K12 textbook orders in various formats and conduct research for additional sources of instruction materials for students with visual impairments.
Respond to phone and in-person inquiries.
Attend workshops, conferences and other meetings as required.
Perform other duties, as assigned.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Elementary and secondary level subjects, and applicable and specific Braille Codes.
Standards, techniques, and procedures typically used for the production of materials for the visually impaired.
Standard office procedures.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Reading and writing English communication skills.
Ability to:
Operate standard and specialized office equipment including computers and related software applications.
Meet state specifications for the production of materials for the visually impaired.
Understand instructional and learning problems characteristic of students with visual impairments.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing and maintain cooperative relationships.

Experience:
Two years of experience of acceptable level and quality transcribing Braille and preparing materials for students with visual impairments.
Any other combination of education, training and experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the use of personal transportation. Also, ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates, and maintain insurability.
Desirable:
Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.

Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Work environment is generally clean and the noise level is usually moderate.
Incumbent will be required to use a personal vehicle to visit various work sites, attend meetings, and training as needed.
Occasional overtime work may be required.

Mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects (keyboard, telephone, and common office machines and equipment).
