POSITION TITLE: Middle School Teacher – Grades 6, 7, 8 GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Middle School Principal, is primarily responsible for the academic, social and psychological growth of students in a departmentalized middle school. The teacher is expected to maintain a safe, caring, student-centered environment that promotes high academic and ethical standards and to perform other duties directly related to this position description. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: General: Ensures the continual improvement of learning for every student. Implements the appropriate actions and strategies delineated for the school as part of the District’s Mission Statement. Diagnose, assess, instruct, guide and counsel students and maintain professional standards and skills to provide a positive classroom and school climate. Provides a classroom environment that fosters the opportunity to meet the individual needs of all students. Attempts to successfully meet/accomplish, subject matter objectives established by the department school and District for each student. Promotes the valuing of every student’s right to be treated with dignity and respect. Demonstrates leadership and support of the educational and administrative philosophies of the school. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow staff, parents and community members. Additional Related Duties/Responsibilities: Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintain required inventory records. Ensures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting and ventilation to the extent possible. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with District testing program; Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level. Shares in sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees. Working Conditions: Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time. Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter and observing students. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation. Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl. Ability to reach in all directions. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to carry up to 50 pounds. Moderate to high stress level. Environmental Conditions: Work is predominantly in classroom, school environment. Physical education teachers work predominately outdoors. Temperature – normal climate. Contacts: Daily contact with students, teachers and school staff. Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel. Occupational Certificates/Licenses: Holds a valid Elementary California Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. First Aid and CPR certification. Employment Standards: Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.
