About the Employer

Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, the El Monte Union High School District was established in 1901. Its high schools include Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte and Fernando R. Ledesma High School. EMUHSD also features the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School, one of California’s largest and most respected adult programs. EMUHSD employs over 600 certificated employees and over 500 classified employees. The professional staff provides educational programs for over 7,000 students in grades 9 through 12 and 11,000 in adult education. Just minutes from the hub of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Civic Center, with the Pomona, San Bernardino and 605 freeways traversing the areas, the district boasts many comfortable and residential neighborhoods in addition to providing sites for a myriad of business and industrial facilities. The majority of income for people in this area is broadly grouped into industrial and factory work and retail sales. BASIC FUNCTION:                                                 

Under the direction of the Assistant Principal – Instruction, perform a variety of activities to promote and support the educational program; communicate with parents, students, and faculty to exchange information, increase parent engagement, and provide educational services and assistance to students and families in the educational program.

Classification Characteristics:

This is a bargaining unit position.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Performs a variety of activities to promote and support the educational program: communicates with parents, students and faculty, exchanges information, and increases parent participation in the student's educational process;  E
  • Interprets and translates for parents and students; arranges for meetings, counseling, special activities and field trips; provides transportation as needed;  E
  • Directs parents and students to health care and other community services to meet student needs;
  • Communicates with teachers to inform them of family difficulties at home to obtain greater awareness, cooperation, and sensitivity on the part of faculty;
  • Maintains a variety of files, logs, and records to promote coordination of services among other district and site personnel;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain confidentiality in dealing with sensitive issues concerning student health and welfare

  • Learn and apply sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating, and a variety of computer skills
  • Provide assistance and information to parents and serve as liaison between school, home, and the community
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Operate a District or personal vehicle

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office environment; subject to driving to school and home sites to visit students and parents.  Position requires the ability to hear and speak to parents and students.

High School Diploma or equivalent; plus one year of experience in a position that requires communication/interaction with parents. Bilingual/biliterate in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin is desirable.
