POSITION DESCRIPTION: All special education staff are District employees. Specific location TBD by Director of Special Education. Under the direction of the principal, provide core instruction to supplant general ed instruction. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: E=Essential Duties Plan and provide individual and small group specialized academic instruction for District students with disabilities E; Present activities that are developmentally appropriate for the students and are specially designed to conform with the student’s IEP E; Provide identification, assessment and remediation to district students with special education needs E; Plan, develop and implement legally compliant IEP’s. E; Evaluate student academic and social growth; maintain appropriate records; prepare progress reports; communicate with parents/staff about student progress E; Observe and monitor children’s behavior and development in their environment; develop and oversee implementation of behavior plans, as appropriate E; Plan and coordinate with regular education teachers to ensure classroom success for special education students E; Supervise and train paraprofessionals to work with special needs students within the classroom E; Provide necessary staff development at your site(s) E; Provide training for parents to develop a partnership between student, school and home to ensure the success of the special needs student and to help parents understand the special needs of their children E; Assist parents to seek and coordinate other services in their community that may be provided to their children by various agencies, such as Regional Center E; Supervise students in and out of the classroom E; Attend staff meetings and participate in in-service education workshops provided by the school, the District, the SELPA, or other self-selected professional growth activities E; Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
1. Valid California Special Education teaching credential (mild to moderate) OR active enrollment in a university intern program.
2. Other valid California Teaching Credentials for core content instruction as mandated by NCLB. Please Note: The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires all public school districts to hire “highly qualified” teachers. Albany USD is committed to hiring teachers who meet the NCLB description of highly qualified.
3. Authorization to work with English Language Learners (such as CLAD Certification)
4. Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
5. Ability to work cooperatively with other staff members.

SCHOOL DISTRICT/COMMUNITY:The Albany Unified School District is located between Berkeley and El Cerrito on the San Francisco Bay. It is a relatively small district approximately one mile square. The District has similar boundaries to the City of Albany and presently enrolls about 3,000 students in grades K-12. Students attend three K-5 schools, one 6-8 middle school, one 9-12 high school, and a continuation high school. The District also has a Children’s Center pre-school and an Adult school. The community is primarily residential with a population of 17,000. Albany is a diverse, attractive community in which to live. Parental involvement in the schools is an important factor in the high quality of education and the high achievement of students.
