JOB DESCRIPTION NURSE Nurse Examples of Duties: a.Assist in providing a safe and healthful school environment. Attend to emergency illnesses, injuries and provide a leadership in administration of first aid. b.Maintain current health records and emergency cards for all students, maintain a current list of students with major health problems, and obtain an annual medical update on students with convulsive disorders. c.Assess and evaluate the health status of students, and to guide, counsel and follow up on students’ individual health needs. Participate in procedures relating to referrals for district guidance and home teaching. d.Participate in the evaluation process of students in special education programs, adaptive physical education, driver training and lunch program. e.Conduct hearing and vision tests required by law, make appropriate referrals and follow through on these referrals. f.Identify students having special problems and work with teachers, guidance coordinators, parents/guardians, special services personnel and administrative staff in providing for their special needs. Confer with family and physicians as necessary. Administer medication as necessary (bee sting, diabetes, etc.) g.Be responsible for the implementation of requirements on immunization, and advise on prevention of communicable disease. h.Provide resource assistance for teachers in health education and other courses as requested. i.Perform additional duties as assigned, including but not limited to, supervising procedures for reporting injuries, administering arrangements for medical excuses, medical clearance for athletics and driver training and periodically review and evaluate the health services program. j.Represent the school health program to other community agencies and programs. k.Sponsor schoolwide health programs utilizing community resources. l.Teach the health education course m.Provide AIDS instruction and bloodborne pathogens instruction update to seniors and campus staff on a yearly basis. n.Participate as a member of the DATE Committee and implement a drug, alcohol and tobacco use reduction and prevention program including support groups and tobacco-free teen groups. o.Provide health instruction for staff. p.Participate as a member of the disaster and crises intervention teams. q.Serve as a resource for parent/guardian education. Working Environment Environment: A school environment. Physical Abilities: Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. Light to moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds). Reaching, stooping, pulling, pushing, bending, walking, writing on blackboard, and keyboarding. Speech, hearing and vision emphasized. California Credential preferred; ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with students, parents and faculty and with the appropriate records; ability to with and be sensitive to the needs of young people; ability to deal politely with members of the public knowledge of rules, regulations, procedures and policies of public schools and school districts. **The Education code requires that a criminal background check be conducted on all persons prior to employment by a school district to ascertain whether the applicant has been arrested or convicted of any crime.
