SAVANNA SCHOOL DISTRICT
CUSTODIAN

Characteristics of the Class:

Under supervision of the Building Principal of the school to which assigned or his designee; performs custodial duties to maintain the school building classrooms, halls, offices and other spaces, in a clean, orderly and presentable condition; performs minor routine, semi-skilled maintenance and repair work and other related and miscellaneous tasks, as required or directed.

Requires responsibility for: following established work schedules, cleaning methods and procedures; using simple manual skills, tools, equipment and supplies to clean interiors and exteriors of buildings, grounds, and other facilities and equipment as well as adjacent exterior paved areas.

Nature of work requires sustained physical effort involving continuous light work and occasional heavy work in moving or lifting supplies, furniture and equipment, with some exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.

Example of Duties:

1. Moves furniture in classrooms, teachers’ lounge and office to permit cleaning floors, dry-mops floors; cleans furfaces exposed to duty; cleans whiteboards in classrooms; empties waste containers.

2. Wet-mops floor areas around sinks in classrooms; wet-mops floor in teachers’ lounge and in offices, as needed.

3. Cleans around door facings and door knobs in classrooms; empties wastebaskets; empties pencil sharpeners; cleans sinks; empties teachers’ lounge trash containers.

4. Picks up debris in courtyard areas, along walks, on play areas, and in front of the school.

5. Cleans erasers with electric cleaner; distributes cleaned erasers to classrooms.

6. Sets up folding chairs for various meetings held in auditorium; folds and puts chairs away after meeting.

7. Replenishes paper towels, soap, and toilet paper in classrooms, teachers’ lounge, and restrooms.

8. Cleans custodial tool and supply room; washes and dries mops; keeps tools, materials and supplies in order. Advises office of needed supplies.

9. Checks windows, doors and gates to assure they are locked when leaving premises after work. (night custodian)

10. Cleans individual and multiple restrooms; sweeps and wet mop floors; cleans and washes sinks, toilet bowls and all chromium fixtures, as necessary.

11. Wet mops and waxes floors or portions of floors and hallways, as necessary; at intervals, especially during summer and holiday vacations, waxes and buffs entire floor areas throughout buildings.

12. Vacuums carpets in kindergarten rooms and offices; vacuums entire carpeted areas in classrooms, cleans, dry and wet mops the composition title surfaced border areas.

13. Sweeps entrance walk, main walks and patio areas daily.

14. Unlocks doors; opens school office and restrooms; checks bulletin board and mail box for day’s activities in auditorium; dust mops office and teachers lounge floors; empties waste receptacles; cleans adult restrooms; replenishes paper towels and toilet paper; replaces burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, and inspects facilities for vandalism.

15. Mixes disinfectant cleaning solution; washes drinking fountains and cleans chrome fixtures and fittings; opens lower grades restrooms, inspects and checks facilities.

16. Puts up tetherballs and volleyball nets on play area as needed; raises flags.

17. Sweeps all sidewalks, including kindergarten patio area; picks up waste paper along the walks and adjacent areas; turns on sprinkler systems to water lawn areas when requested.

18. Checks and spot washes windows and glass in doors, as necessary; periodically washes all windows throughout the school, principally necessary during summer and holiday vacations.

19. Opens school cafeteria doors; checks cook’s restroom; cleans and replenishes paper towels and toilet tissue, as necessary; later sets up cafeteria tables and benches for lunches; opens exit doors; sets out garbage cans nearby; turns on fly fans; checks loud speaker system at speaker’s stand; places trash cans on patio.

20. Puts up folding cafeteria tables and benches in wall openings, sweeps and mops cafeteria floor; empties trash and garbage into central collection bin; washes empty receptacles; sweeps outside lunch patio area.

21. Sweeps and mops kitchen; washes mops and hangs up to dry; locks kitchen for the day.

22. Takes down and stores tetherballs and volleyball nets; stores volleyballs; and takes down, folds and stores flags.

23. Checks civic center calendar for possible night events and meetings; sets up tables, chairs and speaker’s rostrum.

24. When school supplies are received every month, carries them to the teachers’ workroom and school office storerooms; places in their correct locations.

25. Upon leaving at end of shift, locks all windows and doors in office and other locations; makes final check with school office coordinator. (day custodian)

26. Removes inappropriate objects from the roof.

27. Cleans up after accidents and spills (sick children, paint).

28. Conducts periodic inspection of fire extinguishers and playground equipment for safety purposes.

29. Lights pilot lights in furnaces and adjusts room thermostats as necessary.

30. Day and night custodians may have typical duties that the other might not be required to do such as the raising of flags, opening buildings, and receiving cafeteria food for day men, and closing off of buildings and civic centers for night men.

Desired Qualifications:

(a) Training and Experience; Completion of four years high school, supplemented by at least one year practical experience in performing custodial and janitorial duties, or an equivalent combination of such training and experience.

(b) Knowledge, Abilities and Skill: Good working knowledge of the methods, materials, chemicals, cleaning compounds and disinfectants as well as janitorial tools and equipment.

(c) Ability and Skill to: Properly use janitorial tools, equipment and supplies in an efficient, economical and safe manner, and the ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability and skill to relate well with pupils, teachers, parents and principals, in developing and maintaining good working relations.

Required Qualifications:

License or Certificate: Requires a recent TB Skin Test examination with negative report.

Information on specific time and location for the written exam will be sent in an email confirming receipt of application. Must pass written and oral exams, negative TB test, physical exam and fingerprint clearance prior to employment.

ONLY THE FIRST 40 APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. CLOSING DATE WILL BE REVISED BASED ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. Applicants must notify District 24 hrs prior to exam if they will need ADA accommodations or will not be participating in the written exam. No-Show names will be released to the EDD (unemployment department). The top ten (10) applicants scoring at the 70% level or higher on the written examination will be eligible for the oral portion of the examination. In case there are fewer than three (3) applicants at the 70% level, the three (3) candidates with the highest scores, but no score lower than 50% may be eligible for the oral portion of the examination. Eligibility list will be established for six months. ALL APPLICANTS MUST PRESENT A PHOTO IDENTIFICATION (DRIVER'S LICENSE OR WORK I.D.) WHEN REPORTING FOR THE WRITTEN TEST.
