JOB TITLE: CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN HELPER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor or assigned administrator,
perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled duties involved in various building and
construction projects to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring locks, HVAC,
welding, and concrete work at the entry level.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Construction Technician Helper is the entry-level position and performs unskilled to
semi-skilled construction and building repair duties and a variety of work in related trade
areas to support the Construction Technician I and Construction Technician II-Lead
accomplish assigned projects and tasks.
The Construction Technician I is the intermediate level position and performs skilled
construction and repair work and a variety of work in related trade areas as assigned. The
Construction Technician I requires strong foundational level knowledge in the building,
construction and related trade areas and is able to perform assigned work with limited
supervision.
The Construction Technician II-Lead is the advanced level position that performs skilled
construction and building repair work and a variety of work in related trade areas as
assigned. The Construction Technician II-Lead provides training and assistance to the
Construction Technician I, Construction Technician Helper, and CTE Construction
students with the overall completion of assigned projects and tasks.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assists with entry-level unskilled and semi-skilled duties involved in various carpentry
projects, including the building, installation, alteration and repair of partitions, doors,
forms, window frames, shelves, counters, cabinets, fences, and furniture.
Assists in the performance of tasks related to a variety of building and equipment
maintenance needs involving plastering, glazing, painting, furniture moving and other
related activities; assists in the repair and maintenance of equipment, grease traps, vinyl
tile, ceramic tile, roofs, gates and fencing; assists with applying roofing material and
making minor roofing repairs.
Prepare surfaces for painting, including sanding, filling and priming; apply paint or other
protective or decorative material on a variety of surfaces; repair, paint, refinish, and
maintain desks, chairs, and other furniture.
Assist in the installation and removal of ceramic, vinyl, and other flooring to include the
removal, scraping, laying, cutting, grouting, and sealing as needed.
Assist with electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation, and alteration of
electrical equipment and wiring systems as assigned; assist with the replacement of fuses,
fixtures, sockets, drop cords, outlets and switches.
Assist with mechanical maintenance work involved in the repair, installation and alteration
of heating, ventilating and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities.
Assist with plumbing maintenance work involved in the installation, repair, and alteration
of sprinkler systems, irrigation lines, sewers and similar facilities and equipment; assist
with general plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, fixtures, washers and gaskets;
assist with cutting, threading, assembling and replacing pipes; assist with the maintenance
and repair of valves, fittings, ball cocks and other plumbing fixtures; remove drain and line
obstructions.
Assist with maintenance work involved in the repair, adjustment and changing of keyed
and combination locks and the repair of locks; assist with the installation of new locks and
hardware; repair and re-key lock cylinders.
Assist with routine welding duties on benches, fences, ground equipment and other
equipment.
Assist with the repair, patch and blacktop of driveways and parking lots; assist with
concrete work including the constructing and finishing of cement walkways, steps, walls,
floors and driveways.
Assemble and move scaffolding and platforms; pick up and deliver a wide variety of
furniture, appliances, computers, and other materials being moved, refinished, or donated.
Operate tow vehicles to move trailers from site to site; operate a back hoe and fork lift as
needed; use a variety of power and hand tools to accomplish assigned duties safely and
efficiently; clean brushes, tools and other equipment; maintain tools in proper working
condition.
Work overtime in emergency situations.
Maintain routine records related to assigned activities as needed.
OTHER DUTIES:
Peform other job related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Operations, materials, equipment, tools and terms used in building trades and
construction work.
Methods, practices, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of buildings,
structural facilities and related equipment.
Methods, practices and equipment used in one or more building trades with basic
knowledge of one or more specialties including carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical,
mechanical repair, flooring, keying, welding, heating and air conditioning and others.
ABILITY TO:
Perform entry-level unskilled and semi-skilled building repair and maintain work in a
variety of building and technical trades.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Work from plans and specifications, and oral instructions.
Understand and carryout oral and written directions.
Speak and read at a level required to read blueprints, shop drawings, and to successfully
complete assigned projects.
Work cooperatively with others; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with
high school students at the CTE Construction Site.
Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
Operate vehicles and equipment safely and in accordance with traffic laws.
Use hand and power tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
Operate a back hoe and fork lift.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in the construction, building and maintenance trades.
High school diploma or GED and valid California Drivers’ License
Hold Fork Lift Certificate or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.

pounds.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools.
HAZARDS:
Working on ladders or scaffolding.
Fumes from paints and solvents.
Electrical power supply and high voltage.
Potential exposure to hazardous substances and materials.
Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
TERM OF EMPLOMENT: 12 Months

Requirements / Qualifications
