Under supervision, perform a variety of instructional activities; organize and supervise physical education and/or recreational sports activities; assist students in the development of P.E. skills; perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for instructional personnel; and do other related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that might be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises pertaining to physical education and/or recreational sports activities
  • Coach and referee students in a variety of games and activities
  • Assist in the instruction of P.E. skills
  • Review game rules
  • Supervise students during P.E. classes and/or recess recreational activities
  • Direct students into safe learning activities and functions, and assists in the shaping of appropriate social behaviors
  • Assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniques
  • Prepare and assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aides
  • Maintain a variety of records and files
  • Administer routine first aid and request assistance for non-injury or illness
  • Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly and positive learning environment
  • Participate in parent conferences as requested

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic sports rules and other recreational sports activities
  • Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics
  • Student behavior management strategies and techniques
  • Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar
  • Basic arithmetical concepts
  • Routine record management, storage and retrieval systems and procedures

 Ability to:

  • Participate actively in a physical education program
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English
  • Perform routine clerical tasks
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults
  • Use new equipment and technology, as it becomes required to perform this job

Requirements / Qualifications

Experience: • One year of paid or volunteer experience working with multi-age groups of children Education: • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade • Training or coursework in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, or a closely related field desirable
