Job Description Summary

The Physics Department at Cuesta College, a two-year community college, announces the availability of a full-time, tenure-track Physics Instructor position beginning fall semester 2024. This position will be primarily focused on teaching dual enrollment high school physics courses. These courses allow high school students to take college-level, trigonometry-based courses taught online by the instructor and supplemented by their high school physics teacher. This is known locally as “Cuesta-led Dual Enrollment.” The ideal candidate will exhibit a passion for educating Cuesta College's racially and socio-economically diverse student population. We are searching for a person who will enthusiastically engage with their students and work collaboratively with high school physics teachers to promote student success. This position also includes active participation in program review, student learning outcomes assessment, college governance, and shared departmental responsibilities. Desirable candidates will be innovative, collaborative, and supportive individuals with recent experience in teaching physics.

Cuesta College and the Physical Sciences Division value the ability to serve our diverse students from a broad range of cultural heritages, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, abilities and orientations. Therefore, we prioritize applicants who demonstrate they understand the benefits diversity brings to a professional educational community. The successful candidate will be an equity-minded individual committed to collaborating with faculty, classified staff, administration, students and community partners who are also committed to closing equity gaps.

An equity-minded individual is a person who already does or has demonstrated the desire to:

(1) Understand the importance of holding ourselves accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices;

(2) Reframe inequities as a problem of practice and view the elimination of inequities as an individual and collective responsibility;

(3) Encourage positive race-consciousness and embrace human differences;

(4) Reflect on institutional and teaching practices and aim to make them more culturally responsive; and

(5) Strategically build buy-in and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.

Cuesta College seeks employees who value mentorship and working in a collegial, collaborative environment, guided by a commitment to helping all students achieve their educational goals. All departments strongly encourage collaboration across disciplines to create inclusive, integrated, and interdisciplinary learning experiences. College faculty are expected to be knowledgeable about, and willing to use, different learning and teaching methods appropriate to the students they serve.

The Physics Department is the second largest department in the Physical Sciences Division, which includes the disciplines of Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, and Physical Sciences. There are 10 full-time and 9 part-time faculty in the division, with 3 full-time and 2 part-time faculty teaching physics. Our students routinely utilize computers and modern instrumentation to collect and analyze data in our physics labs. The department currently serves about 120 high school dual enrollment trig-based physics students, and about 155 trig-based and 290 calculus-based physics students on our campuses each year. The department also supports student learning through an extensive tutoring program in the college's Student Success Center, and our student-led STEM club.

While the primary focus of this position is to teach Cuesta-led Dual Enrollment online asynchronous classes, the successful candidate may also teach trig-based and calculus-based physics courses, as well as astronomy and physical sciences courses. Assignments may be day or evening classes, at any of the Cuesta College sites within San Luis Obispo County, and/or in any modality.
