Under general supervision, performs highly skilled work in the installation, repair, alteration, service and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration systems and equipment; directs personnel assigned to this craft; assists other maintenance crafts in skilled and semi-skilled tasks; performs related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Plans and implements the installation, alterations, service, repair, and maintenance of various types of
heating, air conditioning, ventilating, and refrigeration equipment and systems
- Estimate time, type and amounts of materials needed; order materials
- Coordinates work with site administrators and other maintenance personnel
- Determines methods to be utilized on jobs; makes rough sketches of projects
- Works on forced air, hot water and low pressure steam heating and air conditioning units
- Uses various testing equipment to locate defective parts, diagnose faulty equipment
- Makes adjustments and repairs
- Adjusts, installs and repairs a variety of electric and electronic switches, motors, thermostats, gauges and valves
- Make pipe connections
- Repairs, rebuilds, aligns or changes shaft bearings, belts and pulleys. Inspects heating, air conditioning, ventilating and refrigeration equipment for conformity with safety standards and regulations
- Makes recommendations for repairs to and replacement of equipment
- Programs and monitors computerized energy management system
- Prepares reports of work done and keeps time, labor and material records
- Maintains accurate inventory of District tools and equipment utilized in the performance of duties
- Drives District vehicles in the performance of job duties
- Provides vacation and temporary relief as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles, terms, practices, materials and equipment used in the heating and air conditioning trade
- Codes and regulations applicable to school facility maintenance, repair and conditioning work in particular, and maintenance work in general construction
- Safe working methods and procedures of heating and air
- Principles, methods and techniques of organization and supervision
Ability to:
- Works from diagrams, blueprints, plans and specifications
- Estimate labor and material needs as required
- Skillfully and safely use tools and equipment in performing electrical maintenance and repair work
- Prepare rough sketches and diagrams for use by maintenance personnel
- Maintain simple records and prepare complete and concise reports
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Direct the work of others as assigned
- Make accurate arithmetic calculations
- Maintain tools and equipment in good condition
- Work underground in trenches, pits, vaults, etc., and at high levels above ground such as on roofs, scaffolds, ladders and other elevated equipment
- Perform heavy manual labor, including frequent bending, stooping and lifting
Experience:
- Two years experience in the heating and air conditioning trade as a journeyman. Classroom hours and certified training will be considered for partial substitution of working experience
Education:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by coursework or training in modern H.V.A.C. methods and techniques
Requirement:
- Valid licenses and certifications required by State and Federal Governments for service and repair of H.V.A.C.
equipment
- Valid California driver’s license
- DMV Printout within the last 3 months
- Insurability by the District’s liability employment insurance carrier
Requirements / Qualifications
Two years experience in the heating and air conditioning trade as a journeyman. Classroom hours and certified training will be considered for partial substitution of working experience
