Position Overview

The counselor, while ensuring compliance, provides consultation, and veterans benefits related guidance and counseling for eligible students with the goal of supporting their academic and career success. The counselor will contribute to the development and streamlining of effective and comprehensive program offerings, procedures and processes for service delivery.

 

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

 

The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.

 

  • Acts as a steward for carrying out Calbright’s mission and strategic vision by demonstrating effective and consistent commitment to equity-centered, competency-based education
  • Serves as an advocate for military and veteran students and connects them with college resources, DoD, and VA resources and benefits as necessary. 
  • Tracks student progress. identifies student needs and offers interventions and supports such as individualized counseling, guidance and workshops related to study skills, time management etc, service and program referrals and advocacy to ensure student progress and success . 
  • Provide consistent, timely, and substantive advisement and support to students including regular and ongoing meetings with students to establish and maintain a trusting and supportive relationship.
  • Advises and guides students into making decisions consistent with interest, goals, abilities, and certificate requirements while also helping them understand Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs guidelines for use of benefits.
  • Explains the variety of programs and  benefits available to (VA) beneficiaries and active-duty military members. 
  • Works in close collaboration with Accessibility Services to support the disability related needs of students through timely referrals and advocacy.
  •  Assists with organizing and offering Veteran and Military student focussed community building events and career and resource fairs and outreach.
  • Assist students in making decisions regarding their  educational plan leading to certificates.
  • Assist students with time management, study skills, goal setting and other success strategies.
  • Fosters student learning through innovative and effective counseling practices and interventions. 
  • Identify barriers to student success, develop action plans to focus on completion, track and communicate opportunities to increase a student’s awareness of self-efficacy, agency, and career readiness. 
  • Collaborate with various teams to stay on the cutting edge of industry standards and employer expectations in order to best coach students.
  • Develop and assess new and innovative ways to successfully support students in achieving their goals. 
  • Responds with urgency to meet student needs and communicates professionally and respectfully with students and all other members of the Calbright community.
  • Collaborates with other professionals within the college to promote a positive, student-centric atmosphere.
  • Assess outreach and engagement efforts and pivot based upon data. 
  • Encourage student engagement with peers, the instructor, support services, and learning resources 
  • Appropriately document student engagement, outreach, and interventions. 
  • Participate in curriculum development, design, implementation, and evaluation to maintain and improve the Veterans services program.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to professional development and continued innovation and improvement of successful academic advisement and support by continuously advancing current knowledge in academic counseling best practices.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Adhere to College policies and procedures, including the completion of mandatory training
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in working with diverse adult learners especially Veterans.
  • In depth knowledge of the programs and  benefits available to (VA) beneficiaries and active-duty military members and associated requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and foster community partnerships and relationships to address student wrap around needs.  
  • Ability to be a self-reflective practitioner and commitment to improving practice through appropriate professional development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving outcomes for all students, particularly disproportionately impacted populations.
  • Knowledge of competency-based education.
  • Demonstrated understanding of career and technical education programming.
  • Strong understanding, adherence and promotion of the tenets of Calbright’s competency-based education model.
  • Technological competency: Proficiency with Google Suite (or similar) applications, student data systems, virtual instructional platforms, and collaboration tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately; friendly, persuasive speaking and writing style.

  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

OR,

  • Possession of a California Community College Counselor Credential (valid for life); 

OR,

  • Equivalent (determined through the Calbright College equivalency process);

Working Conditions and Travel

  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
