DISTRICT COMPUTER/NETWORK TECHNICIAN DEFINITION Under the supervision of the Director of Technology, Assessment and Grant Writing or his/her designee; installs, upgrades, and maintains microcomputer and networking hardware and software; coordinates and performs all moves, adds, and changes for the District data, voice and video systems; assesses and repairs microcomputers, printers, monitors, telephone and related data, video and communications equipment; provides technical support to District microcomputer and terminal users; controls and monitors vendor warranty and specialized repair activities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES •Installs, assembles, tests, operates, maintains and repairs local and wide area networks and data communications hardware including but not limited to video display terminals and monitors, microcomputers, modems, network hubs, bridges, and routers. •Installs, operates, and maintains the District’s voice, video, data technology and telephone systems. •Assists with hardware and other equipment location inventories. •Assists in the administration of the District multi-service network; maintains the networking environment. •Troubleshoots networks, hardware and software, makes adjustments or repairs when required to maintain equipment in proper operating condition; utilizing test equipment and diagnostic software. Coordinates repairs for District telephone voice systems. •Connects District hardware to Student Information System and network servers . •Establishes and maintains preventive maintenance schedule for District microcomputers, monitors, printers, terminals, and related information technology hardware. •Recommends, controls, and monitors off-site vendor repair activity for microcomputer, telecommunication, and video transmission hardware when off-site repairs are required. •Maintains spare parts inventory and makes recommendations on the types and number of parts to be purchased to maintain a minimum inventory. •Assists District office and site staff in the assessment of hardware needs and the selection of equipment compatible with the District Technology Plan. •Maintains contact with vendors and distributors to remain current on equipment and software upgrades. •Trains staff on the utilization of District Technology. •Coordinates work activity with other department personnel during the installation and implementation of new microcomputer, printer, telephone, terminal, peripheral equipment, and cabling. •Prepares requisitions for cabling, connectors, and other computer-related parts when necessary. •Attends training classes, seminars and workshops to provide in-house warranty repairs. •Attends training classes, seminars, and workshops on repair of microcomputer, telecommunication, printers, and related equipment. •Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: •Computer networking systems. •Voice, video and data technologies and telecommunications. •Installation of cabling. •Operational knowledge of MS-DOS, Windows 2000/2003 server, Windows 95, 2000, and XP; Apple System 7.5/OS9/OSX, Microsoft Office and other PC and Macintosh software. Ability to use advance diagnostic and utility software. •Computer network equipment such as: Hubs, bridges, switches, and routers •Operational knowledge of PC and Macintosh troubleshooting and configuration fundamentals for printers, monitors and other peripheral equipment. •The procedures, tools, materials, and electronic testing equipment used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair, and maintenance of networks, microcomputer, telecommunication, video, and related equipment. •Legal mandates, policies, regulations, standards guidelines, and procedures pertaining to the installation, operation, repair and maintenance of networks, computers and computer related equipment. Ability to: •Installation and test cabling for District equipment and networks. •Maintain repair schedules with minimum supervision. •Maintain records, follow oral and written directions, to work cooperatively with others and when appropriate to work independently. •Communicate effectively in oral and written form. •Keyboard or type. •Understand and carry out oral and written direction. •Skillfully install, operate, test, maintain, and repair a variety of computers and computer-related equipment within the District Wide Area Network and standalone systems. •Work independently with little supervision. •Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. •Assist in the planning, acquisition, repair and maintenance of computer equipment and programs within the District Wide Area Network. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, any combination equivalent to an Associates of Arts degree with a minimum of 12 semester units in computer systems and repairs. License Requirement: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License Condition of Employment: Insurability by the District’s liability insurance carrier.
