Job Summary

The Personnel Commission announces an OPEN and PROMOTIONAL recruitment. This recruitment will result in the establishment of one integrated eligibility list. Promotional candidates will have seniority points added to final passing scores (.25 of a point for every year of classified service up to a maximum of 5 points). This list will be used to fill current and future vacancies and will be active for one year or until canceled. (The names of eligible candidates on the current list will be merged to the new list in accordance with final scores.) There are currently multiple position open at various school sites. These are 3.75 hour/day, 10 month position. Under general supervision, performs a variety of supportive tasks for the instructional staff; acts as liaison between home, school and the community; assists with counseling support, credit accrual, and work-study programs for bilingual elementary and secondary students. Positions in this class are assigned paraprofessional work in assisting bilingual elementary and secondary students, concentrating on identified “at risk” students. In addition, positions in this class are required to translate and/or interpret for non-English speaking parents/family members as necessary.

Requirements / Qualifications

Training and Experience The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this classification would typically be acquired through graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate; a minimum of two years of college-level education; extensive and demonstrated (paid or volunteer) experience in working with limited or non-English speaking students and adults; or any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledges and abilities. Related work experience in an educational environment or community action program is desirable. Knowledge of Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Basic arithmetic, filing, and record keeping. Basic computer software applications. Needs, problems, and experiences of “at risk” students and their families. District graduation requirements and college entrance requirements. Community resources for educational, health, and welfare services. Ability to Assist students and parents in a manner that is effective and sensitive to language and cultural differences. Work to a flexible schedule, which includes evening hours to accommodate home visits. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing with all socio-economic levels, understanding cultural differences and language barriers; listen effectively. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, standards and procedures. Perform clerical duties such as organizing and filing records, composing simple memos and letters, producing written materials using a computer or word processor; maintaining computerized database. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Respect the privacy and confidentiality of information. Work independently with a minimum of supervision. Meet schedules and timelines. Speak, read, and write in a language other than English.
